No collar keezer need a fan?

Just to update: I ended up going with a computer fan. The local electronics store helped set me up with a cord that attached to the fan with some quick disconnect things. All I had to do was take a pair of pliers and crimp it together. I don't have a collar and didn't want to drill through the...

    Hello from upstate NY

Hello everyone, Just wanted to introduce myself. I've been brewing for three or four years now, and I've learned probably 90% of what I know about brewing from this site. I don't know what I would have done without HBT! Everything from walking me through my first extract kit, to going all...

No collar keezer need a fan?

Hi all, I'm broke and i'm trying to set up my first keg system. I have a chest freezer coming for free from mom. It's deep enough I don't need a collar and I don't plan on installing shanks and real faucets for quite some time --i'm just using picnic taps. Because there is no collar and...

    FG Reading after 2 weeks

We still haven't heard the details about your beer and you yeast, but in general i would say don't bottle with it at 1.026. Get the beer up towards to top end of the yeasts fermenting range. Once its warm you can also swirl the fermentor around to bring some yeast back into suspension...

Sam Adams to lose craft beer status

I'm shocked how many people want to bash SA and lump them in with BMC. Regardless of their size and production, anyone who has tasted a fresh boston lager on tap at the boston brewery would have to agree that they are indeed selling a finely crafted beer.

Black sediment in cider bottles - Ok?

Hi All, I make a batch of cider with just store bought pasturized cider about 6 months ago. I didn't do anything special with it, I just pitched some champagne yeast. I tried one many months ago and it was rather harsh tasting so I decided to put it in my basement and forget about it for a...

Ordinary Bitter - How Long in Primary?

Thanks for your reply. Glad to hear that worked out well. It does seem like under good fermentation conditions and the right yeast you should be able to bottle a small beer in 2 weeks assuming you've checked taste and gravity.

Ordinary Bitter - How Long in Primary?

You're probably right about tasting to know when it's ready. Assuming I'm not feeling particularly lazy I'll do that. I am hoping to get this bottled asap though because I know you can get away with a fairly quick grain to glass with this style of beer and I don't have anything drinkable right...

Ordinary Bitter - How Long in Primary?

Hi All, I brewed an ordinary bitter yesterday (actually finished today at 2 am!) and it is bubbling away in the ale pails. I know this is one of the faster maturing beers out there and in fact I chose to brew it because my recent brews are more high gravity/roasty and they need more time --...

    Dry Stout Yeast Experiment

I'll be brewing Jamil's Dry Irish Stout all-grain in a week or two. I'm debating whether to go with an irish ale yeast like wlp004 (irish ale yeast) or something with higher attenuation and a cleaner finish like wlp001 (cali ale yeast). I just used wlp004 in an irish red and it did 81%...

    Help with Bohemian Pilsner recipe

Has anyone out there tried Jamil's Bo. Pilsner recipe? I've heard people compare it to Pilsner Urquell, but Jamil's % abv is something like 5.3% compared to P.U. at 4.4% It does sound like a good idea to lower that mash temp. though. Thanks for the suggestions.

    Help with Bohemian Pilsner recipe

I have been planning on brewing Jamil's Bohemian Pilsner this Sunday, and I have all the ingredients in his recipe. I'm using Weyerman Pilsner malt, 5oz of 3.9AA saaz and I have a 7 liter starter from a vial of WLP 800 Pilsner yeast. Tonight I happened to have the pleasure of trying a Pilsner...
