    "Stepping Up" a starter

Not sure what kind of stir plate you have, but I made my own and it works great with both 1/2 gallon growlers and also 1 gallon growlers (which I use the most). I did have to raise my magnet up a little for the growlers, but well worth it.

    "Stepping Up" a starter

I actually thought that "stepping up" a starter would be like Steps 250 ml + 1 smack pack - Let it fully Ferment Add 750 ml of wort - Let it fully ferment Add 2 Liters of wort - Let it fully ferment I believe that you will get more yeast the way you mentioned, but I don't think it's the...

Where to put temp control probe?

Currently I am taping my probe to the fermenter with a little insulation on the outside. I think it's important to try to measure the temp of the liquid, not the ambient air. My question is how much off is temp when taped to the vessel?

    Warm Beer Tap???

I have a collar on my freezer, and have contemplated just taking down the tower and drilling into the collar. If it is temp, that would fix it right?

    Warm Beer Tap???

PSI has varied, but right now it's at about 10 - 12.

    Warm Beer Tap???

I made a tower and put it on my temperature controlled chest freezer. The tower get's little to no cold air in it, and the taps stay roughly at room temperature. I have been having foam issues lately, and am wondering what these warm taps will do as far as foaming goes? Is this my issue...

Looking for 2 gallon container for starter on stir plate

I remembered reading about a 2 gallon jar on the mega stir plate thread. Anyway, I looked it up and the guy used this. I've seen them at the container store. I think I'm going to get one. http://www.anchorhocking.com/prodd_4449_cat_25_montana.html

Air bubbles after fermentation is done

I hate to beat a dead horse, and I know how many threads there have been about "Is my fermentation done?" or "It's taking too long, is there something wrong?". I brewed an Irish Red a few weeks ago, and fermentation seemed to go great. Used a large starter and saw activity in less that 12...

    Wooden Control Box for E-herms

Where is everyone getting their metal boxes?

    Wooden Control Box for E-herms

I need to build a new control box for my Electric Herms and have been contemplating what to use? I have seen a lot of options, but I don't have the tools or experience to do much with metal. What is everyone's thoughts on using a wooden box to hold my BCS-460, a couple of 40A SSRs, a couple...

    Cold Break Removal?

I understand that hot break won't go through the CF chiller, but wouldn't the cold break be generated in the CF chiller? Therefore making it into the fermenter?

    Cold Break Removal?

So I've been considering doing my first lager, and being the anal guy that I am, I've been reading everything I can. I've remember reading about cold break removal for lighter beers? I guess I have a couple of questions? I understand that this is pretty easy if you use an immersion chiller...

    Bottom draining mash tun question

Here is the false bottom I used and works great. A little spendy though? http://morebeer.com/view_product/17242//Hinged_False_Bottom_For_Keg

    Bottom draining mash tun question

I know that this isn't the exact answer you are looking for, but I drilled and welded a 1/2" coupler on the bottom of my sanke mash tun and it works great!!! I couldn't be happier and it works great with my HERMS and has no dead space.

    Pressurized Fermentation Near Disaster

I just checked the gravity of my beer that was jacked up to 60 PSI, and amazingly it fermented out to 1.010. So even after the sudden reduction in pressure to avoid blowing up the keg the yeast finished the job. I'm the first to admit I don't have a very refined palate, but the beer doesn't...

    Pressurized Fermentation Near Disaster

    Pressurized Fermentation Near Disaster

Wortmonger, do you have any idea as to what off flavors would be in the beer? Sounds like you did this once, what does untasty mean?

    Pressurized Fermentation Near Disaster

So I brewed a 10 gallon batch of APA on Sunday. All in all things went pretty well. This is my second batch of pressurized fermentation, and have been reading the thread on it which is awesome. Anyway Day 1, Irish Red that I brewed was chugging along as expected but the pressure gauge...

    Another Starter Step Up Question?

Budzu, I agree with you on over pitching and really appreciate the reply. Do you have any idea as to why option 3 actually produces more yeast?
