    Maple Cider

Last year I made a batch of cider using 5 gallons of organic apple juice and 1/2 gallon of pure NH maple syrup. I thought it was very tasty, although sweeter than I thought it would be. Of course, I made it in a fit of homebrew stupor and I took no notes... Including my yeast. This year I'm...

    My first all-grain!

I think my final yield was closer to 4.5 gals. I didn't think to put any kind of gauge on my carboy, so I've just kinda eyeballed it; I will mark it for my next batch... The LHBS crushes my grain. I dunno, we'll just have to see how it all goes next weekend! Thanks for all the input, folks!

    My first all-grain!

Actually, I did compensate for temp, but thanks for the tip nontheless. Efficiency was 60ish, not too happy about that. My schedule was basically an hour mash at 154 degrees, recirculated with 5 quarts of wort. Sparged w/ 170 degree water, but I didn't let it settle more than 10 minutes...

What got into my mash or wort . . .

Yep, my kid sneezed into the mash. In a couple of weeks, I'll find out! Course, if it tastes great, nobody will be the wiser. If it tastes like crap, I can blame the kid!

Out of curiosity, btw, what recipe did you use?

    First all grain batch

Gratz! I just did my first AG batch too and I can't wait to keg it. I too had a low OG, so that's something I'll have to work on. It's good work, though! It's still beer and it's still something you created!

Kid sneezes in mash, news in 2-3 weeks...

Recusit8m, those ROCK. As it is, I was going to name it Bathroom Brown II (my first extract brew was B.B., as I had to ferment it in the bathroom of my apt), but I like your titles ALOT! globeboxxr, thanks! I like to provide the chuckles when I can!

Kid sneezes in mash, news in 2-3 weeks...

Thanks all, I figured as much. 'Preciate the feedback! Honestly I'm a little more concerned about the fact that I forgot to add Irish Moss... Oh, and that Kentucky Common...? Um... That looks baaaaad. But it sounds like you made out well with it anyway!

Kid sneezes in mash, news in 2-3 weeks...

OK, so my daughter was dutifully observing my mash-in, when about halfway through the process, she sneezed. She was about a foot or so away from the mash tun. I saw no flying debris/boogies, but I fear that she may have contaminated the mash at least with some saliva mist. ("Saliva Sparge...

    My first all-grain!

Well, today was the first all-grain batch, and it probably couldn't have gone much better, imho. There were a few issues: 1. My efficiency was pretty low; my pre-boil gravity was supposed to be 1.041... It was closer to 1.038. I wonder why. 2. My sight-glass on my Blichmann kettle wasn't...

Choices for new basement bar... HELP!

Hi all, We need to get a decision to our contractor this week and I'm having trouble making the decision: Keezer or Fridge? Simple question, but there are factors involved: The only place either will fit is in the corner of the bar area, with cement walls on the left and rear, and a...

A General Thanks to You All

Look out, Miller Lite is now triple hopped.

When I started homebrewing the FIRST thing that my swill-beer drinking friends and family noticed was hops. "Why is it so bitter?" "Why does it taste like flowers or something?" "It smells like grass!" Of course, I took some of those comments personally. But, I got the same comments from...
