Yeast Washing, Is it Really necessary?

I have been thinking about this for a few days now. Would it be easier when you make your starter for your beer to make an extra cup (1 cup of water 1 oz of DME) and before you pitch your starter harvest a bit of yeast from the starter rather than going threw the process of cleaning out all...

    Rauchbier

Using Briess Smoked Malt which is Cherry wood smoked, I can reverse the Pale malt and Smoked Malt amounts. According to Briess; "10-20% - Pronounced smoke character in lighter styles like Scottish Ales and Oktoberfests" I would like to get close to the bamberg Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer ...

2 Stage Immersion Chiller with Pump ?

I was looking for something that would be an inline pump for a closed loop system. First Copper coil in in Prechill ice bath > Pump > Second copper coil in wort > back to first coil. I am thinking that the closed loop will help conserve the ice rather than dumping hot water directly on the ice.

    Rauchbier

This is an upcoming brew i am planning on doing in May. Looking for input on this recipe. As i understand it Hops will conflict with the smoke flavor so i am minimizing it to 1 addition. I am guessing as to my efficiency, as that i have not brewed a partial mash yet, the beer i am brewing...

Dry Hopping and Hop Sediment in bottle.

I did my first dry on my last brew an American Pale Ale. It tastes fantastic, but i had an awful time trying to keep the hops from transferring to the bottling bucket and subsequently to the a few of the bottles. I would prefer not to use a hops bag because i am using carboys for all...

2 Stage Immersion Chiller with Pump ?

I am considering setting up a 2 Stage Immersion Chiller with a pump, However i do not know what kind of pump i would need Currently i am using a single immersion chiller and that seems to be very wasteful of water. I saw mention somewhere of using a pond pump but i can not find that info now...

I will soon be doing my first partial mash, I will for the most part be using the instructions that are provided in this thread with a little change Instead of mashing in the the stanless steel vessel, I purchased a 5 Gal Igloo Water Cooler to use as a mash tun, I decided that this size would be...

How much Pumpkin for a Pumkin Ale?

Ok I am looking to do a pumpkin ale soon for the fall, and was thinking of how much pumpkin to use in the recipe. I reviewed an Episode of Discovery Channels Brewmasters from Dogfish Head. Sam Calagione narrating his recipe stated that he uses 36 cans of pumpkin for 600 barrels of ale. I noticed...
