Wyeast 1272 - how long to see signs of life

I put a pack of 1272 in 5 gallons last night...it didn’t really swell much in the 6 hours after the inner was broken...but in the three times I’ve used a smack pack they’ve never swelled But I’ve had this pack for 4 months or so...wondering if I should throw in a US-05 dry that I have laying...

    Diagnosing my new-to-me minifridge kegerator

Seems to be much better now when I let the inkbird do everything. I think the t-stat was either bad or setup to only chill so far...I'm thinking it was bad as it was hitting the setpoint in 15min. I'm at 1 hour between peaks now, with inkbird set to 38f, 3deg differential, 10min compressor...

    Diagnosing my new-to-me minifridge kegerator

I just bypassed the internal thermostat and it dropped the empty chest down to 30f in about 45 min (from 77f) and it didn’t cycle and the compressor temp didn’t go over 160f (infrared thermo). So now it’s hooked up to an inkbird with the probe strapped to a coke can (probe insulated) sitting on...

    Diagnosing my new-to-me minifridge kegerator

I have a weather station out back that’s connected to my irrigation so it limits watering if it rains. It has the ability to add additional remote temperature and humidity sensors...I throw one in the kegerator. ambientweather.com

Floating Dip Tube In Boil Kettle

I don't think any of these are really going to work that well...I'm like @pvpeacock where I just don't care anymore - I'm more about taste. However what I might try is a no-chill cube, let it sit for a day or 2, transfer then to the fermenter - I'd assume letting it sit in the cube for 2 days...

South East - When to cut back hops

I was working with a buddy the other day - in the mountains of VA and we were re-doing his hop trellis. I took home two small cuttings of the rhizome and they are in a 50 gallon planter (I haven't decided if I'm going to put them in the ground for fear of invasion). That said I've never grown...

    Diagnosing my new-to-me minifridge kegerator

Interesting...although I don't think this is a "high efficiency" mini fridge (ha - that's like an oxymoron right). It's some old thing - Oster brand and just googling the model number returns like no results...it might pre-date the internet. I have a feeling the t-stat is bad or that's just...

    Diagnosing my new-to-me minifridge kegerator

I started posting in the thread about the course adjustment screw on thermostats but I was getting off topic so I started my own separate thread here. I picked up a 5.0 cuft minifridge the other day cheap. Fits 2 corny kegs, 5lb co2, with no mods to boot other than raising the t-stat knob up...

Guide to set internal chest freezer thermostat to >32F; Eliminate external control

Thats my plan this weekend. The other thing I noticed is that it cycles every 15 min or so. I don’t think it’s overload switch because the compressor is only pushing 160f. Hardly long enough for the cold plate to get fully cold (it will if day I leave the door open to make it run). If I’m...

Guide to set internal chest freezer thermostat to >32F; Eliminate external control

I know this thread is old (but not dead) and long...but question. I have a mini fridge that right now I'm using for cold crashing - but it's not getting very cold inside (45f - ambient is 85 in the garage - maybe my ambient is to warm). Would (assuming I have not refrigerant, evap/condense...

Room temp Keg storage -conflicting info

I found a small 5cu mini fridge that fits 2 cornies a 5lb co2 tank all without modification yesterday on CL for $50. my issue is that a chest freezer is too big. I have nowhere to put it....so maybe this will work. I can have 2 on tap and two cold conditioning.

Room temp Keg storage -conflicting info

I’ve never had good success carbing with sugar - although I’ve never tried in a keg.

Room temp Keg storage -conflicting info

This is what I assumed as well...but googling says it's not the same....at least from random people on beer forums :)

Room temp Keg storage -conflicting info

So then yeah since I'm fermenting in a bucket and siphoning to the keg...I assume its going to have some microbes in it. I heard though bigger/higher abv beers have less concern here as that helps keep them sanitized? would it go stale within a few months at room temp?
  15. H

Room temp Keg storage -conflicting info

Right - I'm likely only keeping them at room temp for at most 2-3 months.

Room temp Keg storage -conflicting info

So I’ve been reading about storing kegs at room temp as I don’t have space all the time to keep all of my homebrew cold. I’m seeing conflicting info...some say it’s not pasteurized and therefore it’ll go bad quickly others say nah, carb it up at 30ish psi and let it sit for as long as you want...

Struggling to remove smell from Keg

I think I finally got it out... started with about 120f water, scoop of oxy and let it sit for about 48 hours with randomly shaking it and flipping it. Fingers crossed (last time I did this but not as long the smell came back after it dried...oddly).

Struggling to remove smell from Keg

Guess I need some more PBW and a brush (quit buying it once my kegs were cleaned as Oxi seemed to do just fine...I never let an empty keg sit more than 24 hrs without cleaning).

Struggling to remove smell from Keg

I just bought a couple of used kegs - you know the ones where they only dump the syrup. One cleaned up fine, no smell just like the rest of my kegs. The other has been through two oxiclean 24hr soaks with the occasional shake. It still has a weird smell. It didn't have any caked on residue...

    No-Chill in a bucket?

I wasn't sure what you meant by safe transfer temp - yeah I had read that HDPE could technically handle it, but I was trying to find someone that had actually done it to know if there's any pitfalls, etc.
