A Thank You To This Forum

Hey mikiel - would you happen to have a link to that Boddingtons clone you mentioned. I cannot find it when searching. I appreciate it.

Less Yeast in Bottle - How?

It may just take time for your body to get used to the yeast. I know that my first few beers into my first batch I had some issues but it settled down once I got used to it. You can try cold crashing and gelatin to clear the beer before bottling this will help by dropping some of the yeast out...

Confused about gravity preboil vs OG

Your sparge water temp seems a little low. Usually you need to get the grain bed up to around 168-169 to get all the sugars into suspension so that you can drain that off and therefore achieve your preboil gravity. I took a look at the instructions on Northern Brewers Octoberfest and if you did...

    Your worst home brewing mishap?

My worst came to me all in one batch. First I forgot to preheat my mash tun and significantly undershot my strike temperature even before the grains where in. This forced me to drain the cooler into a pot so I could reheat the water. As I was walking back to the stove with 3 1/2 gallons of 155f...

Columbia/Chapin SC Brewers - Water Data

Totally understand. The place I went to in FL was a combo beer/wine store and had more wine around then beer but it was more of a do it yourself place than Bet-Mar is. When I went into Bet-Mar for the first time it was a little strange not personally putting my grain bill together since most of...

Columbia/Chapin SC Brewers - Water Data

Yes, we just moved at the end of May. I have been to Bet Mar, got my pumpkin ale ingredients there. Very nice people. I didn't know about the one in Lexington. I will have to give it at try. How do they compare?

Columbia/Chapin SC Brewers - Water Data

I know what you mean. I put it off long enough and since I was brewing great stouts in FL the water here started to concern me.

Columbia/Chapin SC Brewers - Water Data

Thank you so much for posting this. I know the water comes from a different plant but from what I have seen they are very similar. I will compare the 2 and at least have some decent numbers to start with. Thanks so much again. Cheers!

Columbia/Chapin SC Brewers - Water Data

Do you have any issues brewing stouts...if you brew any? The local water is a little off for that style with such soft water.

Columbia/Chapin SC Brewers - Water Data

I am trying to get my water dialed in since moving here from FL, much soft water here, but with a tight budget I cannot pay for a Wards report right now. I received numbers from the water dept. but I don't think they are accurate as they don't jive with how Bru'n Water says they should be. If...

    Fermenting too hot?

Unfortunately yes. With temps that high you will see fusal alcohol that will give the beer a hot taste. The hops in the beer may help cover it up, but it most likely will have some issues. Look into fermentation control before you do another batch. Good luck.

Can anyone tell if this looks like an infection?

I have a pumpkin ale in my fermentor right now that is 2 weeks into fermentation today and it looks exactly like that. I wouldn't worry about it, looks fine. I took a gravity reading today and mine is a couple points off and tastes wonderful. I don't think you have anything to worry about. Cheers!

    New State, New Water

The problem that I have now is some of the values the water company gave me don't jive with how Bru'n Water says they should be making me doubt the report. I don't quite have a spare $42 for a water test as the wife is currently unemployed thanks to our move, so funds are tight at the moment.

    New State, New Water

So I recently moved from Florida to South Carolina and the water is very different here. In Florida we had hard high alkaline water which worked out for darker style beers. I never had much success at lighter styles but tended to brew darker anyway. I never made water adjustments in FL and based...
