    columbus hops?

Oh well, lesson learned. Thanks, I appreciate the help!

    columbus hops?

I brewed an oatmeal stout yesterday and bought some Columbus hops to use for bittering. When I opened them, I was turned off by the smell. It reminded me of the first hops I opened a year or so ago that had gone bad. However, I read that Columbus has a pungent aroma, so this may have been...

    Critique dry stout, please

Here is the updated version. At least for the first brew. After I taste it, I may make another with more hops. Thanks all for the input! 1.00 lb Extra Light Dry Extract (3.0 SRM) Dry Extract 12.3 % 5.00 lb Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM) Grain 61.5 % 0.75 lb Barley, Flaked (1.7 SRM) Grain...

    Critique dry stout, please

Yes, I am torn between upping it to 40 IBU's or dropping it to 25! I dunno. I guess I will just have to try it one way, and make another batch the other way to see which I like better! I am trying to get close to a Guinness, but it doesn't have to be exact. Anyway, I may drop the roasted a...

    Critique dry stout, please

Please critique this dry stout. I am not sure if I have too much roasted barley (or too little). What about the hops and bitterness? Thanks! 1.00 lb Extra Light Dry Extract (3.0 SRM) Dry Extract 12.3 % 4.50 lb Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM) Grain 55.4 % 1.50 lb Barley, Flaked (1.7...

    Addicted to homebrew?

Yes, it would be nice to be in an area that sells lots of crafts brews. But the best bet for me to buy commercial beers is Albertsons and Walgreens! They don't have much of a selection. Most of my selection is by major craft brewers. Another reason I got into brewing - cost and variety!

    Addicted to homebrew?

Yesterday I was at the store, and mainly because I saw it on sale, I purchased a 6 pack of Bridgeport Ropewalk Amber Ale. I haven't purchased a commercial beer in nearly 6 months or more. I finally had enough home brew that lasted me all spring and summer. While it wasn't a bad beer, it just...

    hot & cold break?

I have now made 4 all grain brews (albeit, small brews as I don't have the capacity for a 5 gallon brew). One thing I don't get is hot break nor cold break. All I have left in the bottom is hops material (from hops pellets.) Are my boils not strong enough? I boil for 60 min, but it isn't a...

How much better is partial mashing?

I too want to say that PM beer does taste better. I don't know what it is, maybe I just got lucky, but so far all my PM's have been excellent. I have tried some small AG brews (as I don't have the full capacity of a AG brewer) and they taste great too! So far I can tell little difference...

    St Peter's Old-Style Porter

I don't know if you can get an extract kit, but here is the recipe that I will be doing this weekend. It is a small 3-4 gallon all grain recipe, so you'll need to fix it up if you do it yourself. I don't remember where I found the original recipe, but I know I did adjust it (in terms of size...

I have a nice APA that is very refreshing in the summer. The sad thing is, summer hasn't even begun and I am almost out of it! https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?p=310382#post310382

What would replacing M.O. base malt instead of 2-row? Would that change the profile too much?

    how efficient was this mash?

Cool, thanks. I suspected it was in the 70's, so I am happy that it was closer to 80%. I forgot to say I batch sparged. It seems easiest and even if fly sparging will yield 3-5% more, it isn't worth my time for that small amount. As to pitching yeast at 85. Sure it is a bit warm, but since...
