chest freezer/fermentation chamber high temp variance

I get paid to, and get to spend a whole bunch of money, to measure this sort of phenomena. It's essentially impossible to get a stable, stratified temperature condition in a single liquid or gas. Any temp difference at any two points will produce energy exchange and mixing. The universe...

Tape temp controller to carboy and insulate - Really???

"Thermal mass" requires including the specific heat (heat capacity) of the material as well, not just "mass," but this is the correct thought process. You'll also need diffusivity, conductivity and the solution of a reasonably complex differential equation to model the system. Also, remember...

    Red Ale

Nice, simple. Should be pretty. I'd probably add a hop addition at around 15 min for a touch more bitterness and flavor. But that's me. Cheers!

Does anyone malt there own barley?

Malting is certainly one the foundations that would be great to have accomplished. I thought about giving malting a try, but the long, cool germination stage is a bit difficult in So. AZ. Seems like you need a large surface for germination and drying as well, at least to do much grain. Doing...

Estimating Yeast Cell Counts in Fresh Starter

It would be great if this entire thread were rewritten with everyone using the same order of magnitude definitions. Preferably based on base 10 and exponentials as defined a few thousand years ago. :drunk: (10^6 as a "million," 10^9 as a "billion," etc, etc....) ;) Cheers!

    Keep it or dump it?

Good point. At some level, starting over might make more sense. On the other hand, the OG was so low, he only sorta made "wort," so aeration "post" might not make a lot of difference. Adding wort and yeast would be "starting over," kinda... My first beer came out closer to Southern...

    Keep it or dump it?

This is worth a try. At worst, a bit of extract, yeast and time. We all went through trials starting out. This could be good experience and you could get a beer out of it. Cheers!

    Freezer capacity?

Ah. I've just been unlucky. My 2 builds were both old Tappan units. Naturally, I took things apart and had a look. The thermostats on these units were completely enclosed, metal boxes. Sensor into the box, control shaft into the box, contact terminals coming out. No access to the...

    Freezer capacity?

Why? Most (all) freezer temp controls are unlikely to allow you to set a beer serving temp. Likely still need a controller. Cheers!

Pitched a ton of yeast - no signs after 12 hrs?

If this is true, you may be at a pretty low temp. A slow start may be due to this. Can you read the temp somehow? In a 70F room, maybe take the ice out of the bath?? Cheers
