    Fermentation temp

There seems to be a lot of discussion about the importance of a cool 60-65 for fermentation. My issue is I don't have a basement and the best I can do is a closet upstairs in a bedroom (closet for no light). My house is never above 72 but never below 68. Will my yeast still be able to thrive at...

Thank you! No chance I was getting either of those on my own!

    Abbreviations

Can anyone point me to a guide of the acronyms you guys use? I've seen a few and can't make sense of any of them. One was a person talking, I assume, about their significant other. The acronym was SWMBO or something. Single while male bottle Oprah? I dunno. The other said "as always RD...." I...

That looks like a decent deal but I need a brew kettle.

I appreciate all of the info. I hope to be brewing before I go back to work this week but if i am that means I either went to the local (1 hour drive) brew shop or settled for a mr beer for now. In the meantime I guess I just read as much as I can.

I had looked in to an immersion chiller but those things area bit pricy for a guy that hasn't brewed his first batch. I may go that route in the future. For now, it's ice baths in the sink. And I may try the homemade ice as well but again, with contamination concerns, I'd rather take the surer...

That's probably the route I will take. And I think the Midwest kit is the one I'm getting. I just wish I could go pick it up in their store! And I was going to go with the ice bath since I don't trust the bagged ice or the stuff in my ice maker.

Well considering I can get a 5 gallon for $40 and a 7 gallon for $80, need is defined as absolutely necessary to fork over twice the dough to get the job done. If I don't absolutely HAVE to buy it, I don't really want to. I am seriously considering the turkey fryer option because it will allow...

And I still didn't ask a question but I think you can see where I'm going with it. Do I need a 7 gallon brew kettle? Can I get by with a 5 gallon? And I think I asked earlier with no response, but can I use the turkey fryer setups that you can buy? You get an LP burner and a7.5 gallon pot for a...

I had already considered the ale vs lager and settled on an Amber ale for my first batch. Its one of three that I can choose from in the kits I'm looking at. There's the Amber ale, an Irish red and an Irish stout. I'm looking at the kits on midwestsupplies.com because it seems like I'm getting...

That's my concern. I'd like a fermenter, a secondary so it can clarify (not sure that's the right term) while I start another batch in the fermenter. The big kit I was looking at could theoretically have two finishing simultaneously with another two on the way and two fermenting with one extra...

And I thought about the mr beer kit for test batches.

I'm a step ahead of you. I have been on Craigslist. Unfortunately everyone in my area thinks they are a flea market and they sell their gear for market price (new). Ill probably hit the smaller kit with that info. The price is a little higher than $100 but that's because I have to get a stockpot...

Ahh. That does make it tough to measure

Unfortunately the closest brew shop to me is an hour drive. I may visit later on but they are pretty steep on starting kit prices. For now and probably mostly in the future, it'll be mail order for me.

I thought you needed to measure the OG before fermentation?

I can't find anything in here, and maybe I'm in the wrong spot, but I'm looking for information on what I need to get started. I've been looking at homebrew starter kits and found a few that look like they could be good for me to start and even take me in to the next level (a fermenting bucket...
