    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

I wanted to comment on this separately. With every system there's a learning curve. And the only way to get to consistency, is good data. Keep recording your volumes and gravity, keep making adjustments here and there, and you will ultimately end up with consistent numbers. Focus on the basics...

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

I've had Beersmith set at 68% BH efficiency since starting with the AF. After yesterdays batch though I'll be moving that to 71% and expect when it's all said and done I'll end up around 75% BH with an 80% average on the mash. Check out my method from yesterday. Nothing unique, but it's what...

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

Thanks for the info and pictures! I have the ability to put 240 in my garage where I brew pretty easily and the switchable aspect was also one of the reasons I bought the Anvil. But so far I'm not seeing the need. I have the time to brew, my goal is more about making that brew day as easy as...

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

Can you link to what cord you're talking about? One of the main reasons I'm not in a rush to switch over to 240 is your comment about boil overs. The hops only care about 212 degrees, as long as you're hitting that they'll do their thing. Low boils are more predictable and just as effective.

Agree with Noob. Open the kettle valve all the way and use the clamp on the outlet side to control flow. That being said, the valve half open is likely way too fast. And your crush could be much finer since you're using a bag. If they won't change the mill setting then at least have them double...

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

Well, I'm officially in love with this 10.5 AF system. Brewed the 4th batch today and snagged 82% mash efficiency which vastly exceeds my expectations for this thing. Brewing with the grain pipe and The Brew Bag 400 micron made to fit it. Got the strike water up to temp and moved 1 gallon into...

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

You're always very detailed, thanks! We'll see how it goes during tomorrow's session. I've got the Spincycle, my new hop spider and a sparge to experiment with so it should be a fun one.

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

I did see that but wasn't sure if you were doing that every batch. You're essentially doing a hybrid fly/batch sparge by trying to match the outflow of the wort. So have you compared your method of pumping the wort out vs. just lifting the bag and sparging through it? I guess with a bag you...

That wort looks great! So are you sparging then? If yes I'm curious about your mash efficiency since you didn't have to squeeze the bag.

Weak as in not 212 degrees?

By better you just mean faster? Or were there other advantages you noticed?

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

Give it a try on 120, you might be surprised. I've got the 10.5 and so far I'm not seeing any reason to install a 240 outlet so I can run it at the higher voltage. Sure, it would save some time, but I've got plenty of that. And I've always been a low rolling boil guy anyway. Now if you've...

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

Exactly! I bought the AF to be spoiled with simplicity! 🤣 I'm doing a saison on Monday and plan to do as you described, more for the practice because I'm doing a DIPA later this month that'll require it due to the size of the grain bill. I told a buddy of mine that brews all grain about how...

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

Got some goodies for Monday's brew session today. First, the coveted Spincycle Overboard came in yesterday. Very nicely done, simple, should be effective. The second is the reason I'm posting, the hop spider I got from Austin Homebrew Supply. I had this exact one that I used on my keggle...

Why Do Beer Kits only Include One Yeast Package

Pitching any quality, packaged yeast will turn your wort into beer. This is why kits only come with one pack, it'll work. Pitching the proper amount will make better beer, objectively and subjectively. I'm also a huge fan of washing yeast. I stick to one strain for about 90% of my brews so why...

Why Do Beer Kits only Include One Yeast Package

I thought this particular debate was about pitching rates. 🤷‍♂️ Prohibition destroyed the beer industry in the US. It's unfortunate it took so long to recover, but I'm definitely glad it did. Even in the early 90's, when I started drinking in volume, options were limited. Within 20 years that...

Why Do Beer Kits only Include One Yeast Package

This right here. I've done side by side comparisons, there are very noticeable differences in the finished beer especially as the OG creeps up. There is also no accounting for taste.

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

In a perfect world you shouldn't need to mill anything that's essentially already milled. When I have my own mill I always ask for stuff like oats to be bagged separately. But it won't hurt anything to run these types of grains through the mill either in a situation like Knightshade's.

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

Not sure which version of Beersmith you're using, I'm on V2, but you should be able to update the default grain absorption rate in the advanced settings for both standard and BIAB methods. If you're already tracking this each batch you should have a good average by now for your system, update...

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

Beer style shouldn't necessarily impact mash efficiency, but I can promise you that crush did. You'll make beer, and it'll likely still be tasty. There's no harm in re-milling the grains should that happen again in the future, especially if you're targeting a tighter mill gap than what the LHBS...
