    MrMalty Pitching Rate Question

So I'm going to be brewing a Schwarzbier this weekend and I recently bought a yeast starter kit to improve my beer. Acording to Mr. Malty I need to make a 4.34 Liter starter. Is that 4.34 liter of wort for the starter or 4.34 liter of yeast slurry that I need to grow and pitch? Either way it...

    fermentation experiment.

I"m curious as to why you used two yeasts? Not sure what this will end up as using 2 different yeasts and combining all of those flavors. I probably would have tried to melt the skittles down with water instead of soaking them. Let us know how it turns out.

Can I leave in primary for over a month?

From everything I have read you a fairly safe up to 6 months. Not that I would primary that long. I am leaving my Belgian for as long as I can stand it up to 2 months though. Hope I can hold out.

    Weird white stuff

If my first beer looked like either of those two I would be running to the forums as well. Wow that is a lot of yeasty stuff.

Too much forum reading has this NOOB scared

I roamed the forum for about 3 weeks before I actually brewed my first batch. There are a ton of little procedure things that I learned from actually doing the batch that are specific to my setup. I think the biggest thing for any first time brewer is to remember how hard it is to screw up a...

Weird green spongelike layer on the lid my IPA??? is it ok?

That is hop sludge? Looks more like the bucket filled to the top with krausen and some got stuck on the top. Either way that is a tasty looking beer you have going there ;)

    Always use a blow off

Hopefully if that happens I can just unplug it and hose it out :D

    Always use a blow off

Yeah, I think it may be a stuck fermentation though. I got about 2 inches of krausen then it all dropped back in around day 5. Been quiet ever since. I do have it in a 6.5 gallon carboy so there is some room. I just really like the three piece airlocks for some reason. The hose coming off...

    Starsan question

Not sure. My first batch hit the primary on the 11th. Everything looks good so far. No sign of an infection even though it would be way early for that. I just figured if I can add the extra time to filter or boil the water to make sure the Starsan is as usefull as possible then I should. I am...

    Starsan question

Huh, mine does the same thing. Anyone know if charcoal filtering or boiling the water will fix this?

What would you drink if you were going to Germany??

Get some Kostrizer (schwarzbier) and some cheap Chimay (belgian ale). Stay away from Bitburger. Paint thinner stuff makes Miller Light seem enjoyable.

    hydrometer

Whole point of a theif to me. I can drain the sample against the neck of the carboy, no beer lost.

    Always use a blow off

Can't. Can't stay away from my bubbling airlock right at eye level. The suspense in the very beggining and the crazy activity just pull me in. Also why I went with glass carboys. Guess I'm a glutton for punishment. I think I have 7 airlocks and I just brewed my first beer :D (I do keep my...

Is this the oxyclean people are using in place of PBW?

Hmm. I can't remember if the one I got is free or not. Oh well, I'm only using it to soak anyway. As long as you rinse well I don't think it matters if you are using glass.

Questions about Wyeast and a Belgian Tripel

From what I've read it is always best to make a starter. It will lower the stress on the yeast especially in higher OG beers. Doesn't matter if it is dry, test tube, or activator. I pitched my first beer (Belgian Dubbel) only with the test tube and I'm afraid I may have a stuck fermentation...

i'll support my LHBS but, what is your goto online?

Austin Homebrew has been my location of choice. They have a large list of extract kits and of course the free shipping over $100. I did the math between them and Midwest and Austin Homebrew came out way ahead when ordering equipment. My last shipment was 113 pounds with no shipping. Their prices...

First Brew - A brew tale

Congrats on the batch. My first batch is in primary too. Sometime during days 4 and 5 the krausen fell and airlock activity really slowed. It is a Belgian Dubbel though so I'm leaving it in primary for 60 days. Supplies to do my next batch (and some wine) should be arriving on Monday. Hope your...

    Limit to the blog?

I started a new blog with my first brew and I don't see the "Post to Blog" link to post my update. Am I blind or not allowed to post more than 1 in a certain ammount of time? (been 2 days since first post)

    Visible fermentation taking FOREVER!!!

That right there is why I can't use a bucket to ferment. I would have the lid open every other minute. Right now my first brew is sitting at home in my carboy and I can't wait to see how it has changed since Tuesday.

    Legal Questions - Large Brew

Most states have limit on how much you can brew. I think there us a federal limit too. May want to look into that if you are loking to start a large brewing operation.
