Two hearted Ale partial mash, need help

I've mostly stuck with AHS kits, but want to try my own recipe now and need some help. I've tried to model this from eschatz's all grain recipe. Let me know what you think before I order and start brewing, thank you! I plan on mashing the grains at 154 for 60 minutes (1.5q/#), batch...

    Seperating Hops from Wort

+1 to mushroom, i just pour it all into the primary and let it hang out for 4 weeks!

How to use hydrometer with no theif?

I'd say there's a higher chance of contamination with just dropping the hydrometer into the primary. For one, you could only hold the end inch or so and if it bobs into the wort, you've basically stuck your finger in there. You may have to get your face close to the wort in order to get a...

How to use hydrometer with no theif?

I sanitize a measuring cup (around 2/3 cup) and use that to dip out my sample. On a previous batch of mine, i put hot wort into the hydrometer storage tube and melted it (oops) so I recently bought this from AHS: http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_info.php?cPath=178_67_64&products_id=1001...

Newbie first batch - missed step and questions

I keep a measuring cup (around 2/3 cup) in sanitizer water. Always make sure the wort is mixed well before obtaining a sample to ensure it is homogenous. I used to use the plastic tube that my hydrometer was stored in until i melted it with hot wort (oops). Since then I bought a glass...

    hydrometer calibration

Good catch yooper, yeah i meant 0.996. And yeah, i'm not sure where i got a corrected value of 0.996 the first time, you're right, it was 0.997. Here's a pic of the instructions that show the reading should be taken from the top of the meniscus: Also, i just re-read my hydrometer. Got...

    hydrometer calibration

Hey guys, I'm trying to get my hydrometer (calibrated at 60F) dialed in here. At 70F with distilled water, it reads 0.096. I put this into beersmith's calibration tool and it says the gravity is truly 0.096. The beer I just brewed had an OG of 1.064 @ 80F. Corrected using beersmith, this...

    Yet another mozz failure...help?

Well mozz making take 2 was a success! Went to walmart and bought some cheap "Great-value" brand vitamin D milk. Says right on the label pasteurized and homogenized (the key being not ultra pasteurized). Got a nice loaf of cheese!

    Yet another mozz failure...help?

Ok, so i was pretty excited to get my mozz cheese kit in the mail today from AHS (Austin Homebrew Supply). Since Kroger's milk is not labeled as being pasteruized or ultrapasteurized, i decided to go with some info from a link I found on here. I made 112 oz of milk from dry non-fat milk...

    So how obsessive am I?

Haha yeah, totally normal. I get obsessive over counting seconds between bubbles during the initial fermentation as well as the temp. Love the smell those fermentation bubbles make! It does get a bit less OCD the more batches you do though! I'm in pure pain right now since I'm leaving my...

    Noob question about OG

I would use whatever volume of finished wort you will have. If you boil down to 4 gallons, you're going to have a pretty concentrated wort with a high OG. If you dilute that with an additional gallon of water, that will lower the OG. I'd go with 5 gallons for your calculation.

Need help w/ partial mash - sparge

Hey guys, I've made about 5 batches of beer so far, and they've all turned out really good. I wanted to make sure my technique was good though, as I'm still confused I'f im doing the sparge step correctly. I'm not at home, so I can't comment on the grain:water ratio for the sparge. I'll...

Amount of priming sugar for Hefeweizen

    Weird, that's only 2.3 vols of CO2.

Amount of priming sugar for Hefeweizen

Thanks for the input. Im using the Wyeast 3068 yeast with this one, and in the description it mentions that 3.2 volumes of C02 is good for this one. The CO2 calc websites have said 4 volumes of CO2 though, that's why i was aiming so high. I'll just add an extra ounce of cane sugar as suggested.

Amount of priming sugar for Hefeweizen

Hi guys, I have a hefeweizen from AHS 1 day in the primary and was starting to think about how much priming sugar I would need. I have about 5.5G so after we siphon off the top, I'll have around 5-5.25G to bottle. The kit came with 4.5oz of priming sugar (corn sugar). I've checked out the...

parital mash OG a bit low

Hi guys, The last batch I brewed was a little short of the calculated OG. It was a kit from AHS and should have been about 1.050 but mine was 1.045. I'm wondering how to correct this. I'm still a noob (brewed 3 batches). Can I add concentrated DME w/ water to bring up my overall OG before...

Moving beer from brewpot to fermenter.

I guess I'm a bit concerned about the amount of sediment in the bottom of my fermenter as well. The last batch had about 3/4 gallon in the bottom after 2 weeks of settling. Any need to facilitate its removal when pouring into the fermenter? I know some of this was the yeast cake too.

Moving beer from brewpot to fermenter.

Hey guys, Quick question. Does anyone try to remove any of the trub from the boil when transferring the wort to your fermenter? I use pelleted hops so by the end of the boil they're pretty much everywhere in the wort. I never worry too much about it and just poor the entire wort after being...
