    Your favorite stout yeast

Wlp002 is my default for stouts.

    Starter Issue

It's underpitching either way, but I think it wouldn't matter between the two so go for the simplest and just pitch both straight up. Not ideal, but shouldn't be a big deal on a hefe. WLP300 is a beast.

Mead in Clear or Brown Bottles

If light affects mead so much why don't more people use brown bottles for bottling it?

    No NHC 2014 photo thread?

I've been searching the forum and don't see if anyone started an NHC photo thread for this year. I see a few threads from prior years. If one for 2014 doesn't exist let's start one.

    stout recipe ideas

"Typically, if 2–3% of your grist is roasted barley, you should get a very distinctive flavor. Aside from our porter and imperial stout, we have used roasted barley in our brown ale with a great deal of success." and... "The rule of thumb for using any dark malt is “a little dab will do...

What in the grain bill gives beers that orange color

There are a number of grains that would do that. Special roast is one.

WLP007 Starter Looks Different from Previous Starters

Well, the cake was somewhat chunky and the yeast took off in the Barleywine last night so I guess I shouldn't be concerned. It was a different acting starter than I'm used to though.

WLP007 Starter Looks Different from Previous Starters

I just used a fresh vial of WLP007 and noticetd this same difference. It's been awhile since I've used this yeast, but I know I've used it maybe about 10 times in the past and always remembered the starters having a clumpy egg drop soup look to them. The starter I'm doing this week is...

I'd be curious to see if anyone has taste results from an experiment involving each method.

NHC 2014- Grand Rapids Who's going?

You're not the first one that's said this. There's always next year! As far as the HBT meetup goes, we don't really need a booth, just a big sign or banner someone can mount above a table for all to see with the HBT logo on it they can recognize. People can then just go hang out near that...

    Early Morning Brews

Definitely prefer morning brewing. I try to finish no later than 2pm these days for many reasons. When I started I remember how it sucked having to clean up half buzzed and hungry after supper time.
