    Yeast Questions

The low cell count of New England is true. On a recommendation in the forum I have used one pack of Verdant and one pack of New England co-pitched. I have repitched the cake a few times with great results also. Verdant can leave it a little too sweet but adding the New England helps with...

Fermentation in High Temperatures - Florida

The electricity cost and the house are both reasons for the high bill. AC doesnt run constantly so maybe it could get that cold, never tried. We still don’t want our house that cold. We heat it as much as we can afford. Pool is heated too, with solar. No one will go in under 90 degrees. It’s...

Fermentation in High Temperatures - Florida

OMG! Native here, we run AC at 79-80! Yes the thermostats are accurate. My kids, also natives, sleep in hoodies under blankets. I know of no one who could afford to run the AC at 68! I highly doubt my systems (2 AC in 2story home, 8 tons of AC) could get the house that cold. On my second...

Wilser BIAB vs The Brew Bag?

Thanks for the link. My exact problem. Never been big on knots but this looks quite easy!

Wilser BIAB vs The Brew Bag?

Hmm, looking in the box I didn’t get that. They did include a couple hop socks.

Wilser BIAB vs The Brew Bag?

I put a Wilser bag on my Christmas list. I have been using my Brew Bag for about 70 batches, it was just getting very stained and the kids needed some inexpensive items to get me. I will say I really like how the Wilser bag fits my pot. However, the lack of the lifting straps means you need a...

    Top 5 Dry Yeasts?

I tried LalBrew Koln several months back for a Kolsch and really liked it. I then repitched it for a west coast IPA and that was also good. Should have saved some of that cake!

Did Northern Brewer Purchase Austin Homebrew AND/OR Adventures in Brewing?

Just wanted to share a positive experience. I haven't bought from Adventures in Homebrewing in several years. I had a gift certificate and with the change in ownership I figured it was gone. On Thanksgiving night I tried to use it but it said it was invalid. I sent an email asking about it. To...

    Keg fermentation headspace

I ferment 4 gallons in a keg all the time. When using a yeast that makes a really big Krausen (like Verdant) I back off to 3.5 gallons. I purge the dry hop and serving keg at the same time, running tubing between them and then into a jar of StarSan. I haven’t tried spunding yet.

Repitching on yeast cake with dry hops

Brewed in a keg with floating dip tube. Added small dry hop charge while flowing CO2. It is cold crashing now. Plan to transfer to a purged serving keg. Question is if I can just put new wort on top of this yeast and dry hop cake? Current batch was a pale ale and the new batch will be an IPA.

American Amber Ale Hoppy American Amber or Malty American Pale Ale?

Has anyone tried this recipe with a Kveik yeast? I have a pack of dry Omega Lutra I am looking to do something with.

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

My one experiment with HG did not turn out well. Looking back I may have fermented hotter than I wanted. Anyone know if that would make it more pungent/sulphery? I harvested the yeast. If I did ferment to hot would that effect the yeast so any repitch would also be bad? I want to try HG again...

    Lutra grain to glass

I did some more reading. Looks like the idea comes up every couple years. It doesn’t look like it will hurt anything but it doesn’t actually help either. I used to put yeast nutrients but after running out early Covid I haven’t been doing so. I need to drop by LHBS anyway, I will get some.
