Why is it so hard to find a brew partner??

Lately the ones I brew with are great at paying for stuff, helping clean up, very interested in the process etc. Bought cornys, co2, carboys, bulk DME etc right after thier first brewing lesson a few weeks ago. We got together last week, there was alot going on for them, but they still showed up...

Should I always follow a recipe

Muntons has left beers a bit sweet for me, but still turned in to beer. How long has it been since you pitched yeast? Probly gonna be fine. Recheck the sg after a couple days see if it has gone down any more, taste the sample see what you think. 1.022 will be a bit sweet, you could pitch in like...

Fermentation chamber heating element wiring help

Some home thermostats can 2 stage if they are made for AC and heat. You would need a 110v relay in the circuit, with a 12 volt coil. Should be around 15 bucks give or take. Radioshack would probly have one, the link above would work also, a socket mount for it would be helpful. To answer your...

should I bottle in Newcastle brown ale bottles?

I like clear bottles for mead and beer both, I like to see the colors. A nice dark beer in a clear bottle, oh yea. I am careful about keeping in a dark room and transporting boxed/covered. I look for clear specifically, I really like the 7 oz coronaita bottles for mead.

    Bottling

The wand fits right onto the spigot on our bucket. A chair and the bucket on the counter or table works great. A short piece of tubing could be used to connect them if needed

    My first batch

Sounds like Joes ancient orange mead. Secondary is when it is racked into another container for a while, usually a few months with mead, before it is bottled. It gets the mead off all the used yeast, pieces of fruit, etc so it is more clear when bottled, without chunks in the bottles. Also keeps...

Raising Fermentation Temp To Clean Up

What are you using for a heat source? I will be using a small heater with its own thermostat. This way even when the controller is sending power to the heater, the heater itself can only get air to a certain temp, say 75 to 80. Also, lots more mass in 5 gallons of beer than in the air in your...

    Other hobbies besides beer?

Hello all What else do you do besides make beer? I like mead myself. Off topic stuff is: Stained glass pic is window in our front room my stepson and wife did, I helped a little. Have quite a few model airplanes, boats, cars nitro and electric, we have a business in lapidary, do some ceramics...

how did you choose recipes when you first started brewing beer?

Went with an Irish Red. Sounded good. What style of beer do you like? Most LHBS will be able to help you with a kit if you know the styles you like.

Attenuation question - fermenting in corny

I have heard as above, surface area, but cannot confirm. A way to test would be to split a batch, both in cornies, lay one on its side or seriously tilt anyway, and stand on up. One would be tall and narrow, one short and wide.

Punctured froen line in mini fridge! Can i recharge?

As above, most service companies charge more than a used fridge costs. They can be repaired and recharged, sometimes not worth it.

    Bottled my first batch today!!!

My SWMBO pretty is great about me doing pretty much anything, as long as we can afford it. We both kinda collect hobbies. I am just starting to get parts for temp control, going to get a couple of the STS-1000 I think they are called, only 25 bucks each or so and can both cool or heat from same...

Beers you dont like? And help figure out why?

Hello all There are a few beers I dont like much, I would like opinions on what the reason could be, yeast style, special additions, etc. Dont care much for trippels, NB Belgo, or Chainbreaker White IPA. I think it seems that coriander in beer is something that my body just doesnt care...

So I cooled the wort 40 degrees in 20 minutes

I used the kitchen sink with running water before I made an immersion coil, got the job done. When the boil kettle was only partial and still fit in the sink, coil inside, water outside, did great. Wish I could check on my beer anytime all day at work and home both!

    Bottled my first batch today!!!

You will probly find this addicting. I finally got a small room/cellar dug out just for beer and brewing stuff, took alot of buckets of dirt up the stairs. Got an IPA (maybe only an APA) and a porter going now, and some huckleberry mead. Constantly sampling beer from chewing grains to warm flat...

Temp control: multi FV's in 1 temp box?

Hello all If 2 or more batches of beer made the same day are put in a temp control box, with say a light ale and a heavier double, will they be happy together in the same temp box, or will the most active one be too hot, and the less one too cold? Is it "optimal" to do one batch at a time, per...

Help with a spiced porter recipe?

I would suggest it is better to have just a hint of a spice, than to be overpowering and undrinkable. For ginger check recipes, I know there is a Barkshack Gingermead that might help there. I would personally try just 1 clove in a gallon, you can always increase the next batch. There is another...
