What I did for beer today

Continued coldcrashing a CDA by adding more ice to the BK being used to hold the carboy. Large kettles are versatile. Boil the wort, set the FV in them for overflow, coldcrash with ice. If they are gonna sit on a shelf, may as well be useful.

    Black IPA Recipe Help

I added 1oz of black patent to a similar recipe, hoping for a slight bite to go with the hops, no idea what to really expect. Used midnight wheat for color, because thats what I had. Kegging in the next couple days.

    What's in your fermenter(s)?

4 gallons CDA. 5 gallons porter. 5 gallons split batch huckleberry mead, half of which I am pretty sure has gone bad :(

    secondary fermentation question

Secondary usually helps yeast to settle and helps clear the beer, rather than attenuate. To start I would try sanitizing a racking cane or other suitable utinsel, and stirring up the yeast. What is your fermentation temp? Sometimes raising the temp a few degrees can help. Are you using the...

    Glass vs Plastic

Got beer in some glass ones right now, but I bought a couple 6 gallon better bottles on the 2 for 1 sale from NB recently. A bit nervous about them but looking fwd to trying. They are made of a plastic that is suppose to keep oxygen out, just like glass. Lighter weight, need to be careful...

    Cold Crashing temps

Chance of freezing may be slight, but with a glass carboy it still has some risk of breaking. Doesnt need to freeze solid to break it.

What did you learn this week?

Learning how to program an Auber ramp/soak temp controller. Will be used for brewing beer, and for a glass kiln. Also cold crashing for the first time, which I suppose also includes learning enough patience while brewing to get that far before wanting to hurry up and drink the beer :)

    Which temperature controller for newbie?

Lots of members on this forum are using the STC1000. Just ordered one last week for a fermentation chamber build. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/ebay-aquarium-temp-controller-build-163849/

    Repeat after me

I really truly am done buying hops til the next harvest. The one that started a few weeks ago of the 2012 crop coming in that is. First beer with Simcoe is cold crashing now, for kegging this weekend. Thinking Sorachi and/or Nelson may be next.

Apfelwein gets you drunk at "warp" speeds...

Just bought 5 gallons of juice to "convert" to apfelwein for the first time. Been using mead for a few years for warp speed blitz. Apfelwein will have to convince me it is better :drunk: , tho I look fwd to the test.

Auber 4342 PID Rims for dummies

Some comments on other threads are that a SSR usually fails in closed position leaving the element on. Many recommend mechanical above 25 amps due to heat in the SSR. SSR can switch faster if you are using a PWM. High amp (+20amps) SSR seems to be less expensive than a contactor. Possibly noise...

Take another hydrometer reading, see if it changed.

    What is the purpose of...

The bottling bucket helps in filling bottles, mixing in the sugar for carbonating in bottles, and it gets the beer off some of the trub when it is racked from the fermentor into the bottling bucket, keeping some stuff out of the bottles. I just got a better bottle to try, I like the carboys...

    Fermentation Temps

Yes I see I went abit askew of original thread question, my bad. To comment on the original question directly, fermentation temp will be much more accurate if the temp probe is in the beer and showing the temp of the fermenting beer, as opposed to the probe in air, where it would be showing the...

    Fermentation Temps

As a refrigeration tech, here are my thoughts, FWIW. Heat flows only one way, from heat to "less heat". The fermenting beer is creating heat, being removed by various means. Water bath evaporation, freezer evap coil, etc. As the "beer container" creates heat, the temp increases in the...
