What do you pay for a Pint of Pliny?

The bar across the street here in Oakland does pitchers of it for $14, which I guess is a really good deal. Especially considering the general prices in the Bay Area.

Favorite non-homebrew to buy to use to bottle

Trader Joe's around here has Mission St. beer that is $1.99 in 22oz (Brown and Hefe). The beer is nothing special, but worth it for the bombers.

    high-output bottling wand?

In every apartment I've been in (5 in the last 8 months, long story...) the fridge has worked well to get the bottling bucket up to a comfortable level with plenty of head.

Anything special to know when using 22oz bottles?

Sometimes I want 'just one more beer' but opening a 22oz bottle is a larger commitment. Sometimes I drink 2, share it or cork it.

    Ninkasi Believer Double Red

My GF and I would love to brew a clone of this beer but we have only made 4 extract batches so far, and I was hoping some of you more experienced folk could help me piece together what little I have found about it. We just tried a Ninkasi Total Domination IPA which is almost done fermenting...

What does your SWMBO think of your brewing hobby(lifestyle for some of you)

My girlfriend and I share good taste in beer, have brewed 4 beers and Apfelwein together, and her help/involvement has gradually declined to 'assistant when needed'. Always eager to help with '2-person jobs', she is also happy to do her own thing until needed. Holding/carrying things, stirring...

    Long-Neck Bottles with Sticky/Rough Shoulders

I was soaking bottles in Oxy to strip labels and came across a handful of bottles that I couldn't get fully clean. It seemed like the glue residue on my plastic scrubby might have adhered to roughness on the shoulder of the bottle. The rest wiped clean without much effort, but the shoulder...

Can you have too many bottles? I estimate to have 500 plus.

Wow - I wondering if I was the only one! Started brewing last October and barely drank/saved enough commercial beer in time to bottle my first batch. Quickly realized I'd need an army of bottles moving forward, with a strong showing of 22ozers. By the time I was bottling my 3rd brew (a great...

    Eliminate My Off-Flavor

The offending beer has been in bottles for over a month. As I mentioned, I detected the flavor at bottling, and it is still there. Not sure if its stronger or weaker. I have a hard time describing it, at first I thought it tasted liquid-malty (like we weren't boiling things well enough and...

    Eliminate My Off-Flavor

First Brew: standard extract + steeped grains American Amber Second Brew: similar extract + steeped grains American Pale Third Brew: different all-dry extract + steeped grains American IPA + dry-hop First beer was good. Maybe a bit too malty for an amber. Second beer though, had an off...

    A Stubborn Old Brewer?

Wow, this thread took-off in ways I'd never imagined - I'll try to respond to multiples here: I think my first batch of beer is good (for a 1st batch), but I have some specific critiques too. I think it is too malty/sweet/syrupy which is why the low-body comment was surprising (?). I thought...

    cleaning bottles

+1 In general, I'm always trying to use water responsibly: After pouring bottles: Rinse, rinse/shake, rinse, drip-dry. With visible film remaining, soak w/ 1/2" of hot tap water overnight, and/or bottle brush - always drip-dry. Extra dirty bottles and virgin (labeled) bottles get 1-2 hrs...

    A Stubborn Old Brewer?

A long-time brewer friend of mine was helping analyze my first brew (standard extract + steeped grain kit: American Amber) and suggested some unusual things (contradictory to things I've read on here). First, he said his main comment on my brew was that it lacked body. He suggested this...

    Largest Pot for Kitchen Stove?

We got a smaller 30qt SS pot for our 2nd batch, and made it on the same stove/burners without further issue. It did further dirty the scratched burners, which we gently cleaned (not fully). We have since moved out of this sublet, and I just got an email from the owner that he was able to clean...

    Over-primed?

To follow-up on this for future readers, I have not had any problems with exploding bottles. After ~3 weeks the carbonation was adequate to begin drinking these. As time went on, the carbonation level rose a bit more making them noticeably (but not critically) over-carbed. They pour fine (no...

    Bottle Crates?

To resurrect this old thread, to add that I have been looking for suitable bottle crates as well. I found these Roughneck Storage Boxes at Home Depot that work well for bottle cases and carboy bins. They are water-tight, and stack-able. The Medium size fits tall-12oz and 22oz, and the Small...

    Missing Extract O.G.?

Thanks all, good to hear things are fine. I'm not one to panic about 'fixing' my beer and such, I just want to make sure I'm constantly improving my process and learning from each batch. I read a lot on HBT, but I guess I hadn't come across similar questions relating to insufficient mixing of...

    Missing Extract O.G.?

First batch (American Amber), I didn't take an OG reading (recipe said 1.056). FG ended up on target (1.016). 2 weeks in bottles, and beer tastes ok, but a bit sweet and not fully carbed. Second batch today, recipe OG was 1.052 but the OG I measured from the carboy was only 1.040-ish...

    Over-primed?

Thanks for the feedback. They are in the basement, which stays well below 70F so it sounds like I should be alright with a bit of caution & care. Anybody else care to offer an opinion, based on calculations or pure experience? Thanks Aaron

    Over-primed?

I used a recipe kit for a 5-gallon batch, and didn't realize until I was done bottling, that we only got 37 12oz (I think, will recount next time I'm downstairs) bottles out of it. I used the entire 3/4 cup of corn sugar provided, which I now realize is probably too much for the...
