    Weldless Valve Installation on Keg

About to install a weldless valve on my keg and I have a question. I know the bottom of the keg is concave so I was wondering how high above the bottom at the keg wall should I drill the hole? I've seen several with dip tubes attached on the inside to siphon the fluid from below the valve...

    Christmas Party Recipe Advice

OK, I was given notice of an upcoming Xmas party and asked to provide a keg. Problem is that I will have to turn the beer around in about 18-21 days. Last year I brought a keg of stout and the guests drank a good bit but most commented that it was darker than what they usually drink...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer None More Black Vanilla Stout

Only drawback I see is they may get pulled into the pick up tube and block it....I doubt you'll get any contribution though. I soak my beans for 3 days then rack the wort on them for 7-14 days.

    Boil Efficiency?

I haven't yet developed my confidence in the refractometer so I still check with both. I take the initial reading with the refractometer and let my hydrometer sample cool. I will add this: I used an ounce of leaf hops in the boil, plus about another ounce total of pellet hops. One of my out...

    Boil Efficiency?

Brewed a small batch this past weekend. I hit my pre-boil gravity and volume almost exactly but my post boil gravity was low by 10 points (volume was spot on). I've checked the predicted values on 3 different systems so I feel pretty confident that they are correct. Any ideas what could have...

How to check gravity post mash

I usually fill my hydrometer with wort and then stand it up in a pitcher of tap water, maybe throw a couple of ice cubes in the water after about 5 minutes. The wort will cool down pretty quickly with that little volume, then take your reading. No way I would rely on temp correction at that kind...

Alright! Another "like" for a source on that punch! :)

    Rubber Grommets (Bucket Fermenters)

I did this to one of the lids this past weekend, although it didn't come out great. Curious what you used to make the hole.

    Rubber Grommets (Bucket Fermenters)

I got the grommets at Home Depot and they did not perform well. Almost reminded me if the reaction you get when you store plastic worms against other plastic in a tackle box.

    Rubber Grommets (Bucket Fermenters)

I got ahold of a couple of small batch size buckets for fermenters and drill holes for the airlocks and installed grommets from HD. After 2 batches (1 per bucket) the grommets seem to have "melted" or reacted to the airlock plastic and they have all but disintegrated. The ones I have on my "ale...

    High pH with BIAB?

My brew which spawned this thread was a light blonde, BIAB version of the Centennial Blonde. Treated the water and included some acid malt. Water calculator predicted a mash pH of 5.4 but I measured 5.84.

    High pH with BIAB?

Well, the brew I asked about was the previous beer. I will say, it was a blonde ale. Next brew was a porter so I think the dark grains helped more with the pH. I've usually been close on the mash pH when I treat my water, but that blonde was the first time I tried a light colored beer with BIAB.

    High pH with BIAB?

I do and my last brew with a grain/water ratio of about 3 hit right on the predicted pH.

    Ridiculously Low Efficiency

I mill it myself. Like I said, I haven't had a real problem with efficiency before, I've always been in the 68-75% range. I thought about it a lot last evening because it frustrated me and I may have found a possible cause. This was a small batch BIAB (2.5 gallon batch). I've always used one...
