Grain husks in boil, harsh bitterness in beer

Hey Guys, I just built a two tier system that is something like a counter top Brutus 20. I am planning on recirculating during the mash but to date have not yet done that. My concern is vorlaufing. I am using a collapsible steamer as my false bottom and at times it seems like no matter how...

    Scorched Element

My biggest issue with finding a LWD element is the diameter of my brew kettle. It is only 9" ID. It is a corny keg. It looks like the LWD element suggested above may JUST fit due to the extra length of the half coupler. I am using a PID that is not PWM capable. This means that I can set a...

    Scorched Element

There was a somewhat small portion of wheat in the brew. Roughly 3%.

    Scorched Element

I would have to agree it was related to the pumpkin at this point. Its a little disappointing I will gave to miss out on the beautiful orange worth that I saw last night when I mashed with the pumpkin!

    Scorched Element

I brewed a Pale Ale last Monday with a slightly lower SG, maybe like 1.038 vs 1.048 for the pumpkin and had no sign of anything like this. I guess I might try using the pumpkin right in the fermentor next time. Hopefully i can't still get some flavor out of it that way.

    Scorched Element

Hey Guys, Last night I brewed for the second time on my all electric two vessel setup. It has a 2kw HWD 120v element in the boil kettle. I also use the boil kettle to heat the strike water. I was brewing a pumpkin ale and had a tough time with a VERY slow sparge but finally got it all...

    White Residue in Kettle

Hey Guys, I fired up my new electric kettle last night and held a couple gallons of water at 152 for an hour or so to simulate a mash and see how the PID worked. It was awesome but when I went to drain the water, I noticed it was very cloudy and when I drained the kettle I was left with this...

    My Electric Brew Pot

Where did you source the components and enclosure for the control box?

    Cheap sightglass fitting...

McMaster has a decent selection on those plastic compression fittings. Mine is rate to something like 250°F. I bought 5 for seven dollars. They are however 1/2" NPT male thread and not 3/8". Here is the part #: 5016K446 - it is for a 3/8" OD Tube which I also sourced from McMaster (Part #: 9176T12)

not mine but I think a good deal

Has anyone had any luck using the keg tool and soldering to this pot at all? I need to add a heating element and after my last try with a cheap pot, I am very gun shy.

    Kettle Drilling Problem

The pot was for sure made using a spinning process. The pot was something I picked up when I first started extract brewing. It came in a set of three from Walmart for something like $20. It was a 16qt pot. Now, moving forward, any recommendations for a pot that will stand up to this type of...

    Kettle Drilling Problem

Update: I found out we had a set of conduit punches at work today and I made a beautiful hole with very little effort. Brought the kettle home, tried using the keg tool to flare/enlarge the hole to fit the half coupling and here are the results. I used lubricant while using the tool as well...

    Kettle Drilling Problem

This will not be a direct fired pot, it is going to be heated by a water heater element in the kettle. I have no worries about the solder not holding up to the heat. The hydrocarbon thing didn't concern me from a sanitation stand point. Others had said that the oil affected the soldering...

    Kettle Drilling Problem

I will absolutely not use jb weld on anything that touches my beer. I could teach myself to weld it, I have a tig at my parents house but I can't even get a hole drilled and I've never welded stainless before. As far as solder goes, solder will not reliably hold that joint together. Solder needs...

    Kettle Drilling Problem

Well Guys, I just ruined what I was going to use as a MLT in a Countertop Brutus 20 build this week. I read all the stainless soldering threads and being a car guy and an engineer, had little worries about this project. I've done soldering and welding before so I had a decent idea about what...
