Why is my brew always bitter?

FWIW, I battled for a while with a constant astringent off taste in my brews, and I finally solved it by using acid malt (and 5.2 stabilizer) to lower my mash pH, as JLem and others are suggesting. It's an easy, inexpensive experiment to try.

How to keep hop cones tight while drying

Yep, first year. Does that mean they are essentially useless for dry hopping?

How to keep hop cones tight while drying

So I've started harvesting a couple dozen mature Cascade cones, as a kind of test as the rest of the cones mature. I'm drying them on window screen stretched over a wood frame, in my shed which is totally dry. As the cones dry, they are starting to fan out and lose their "cone" shape -- the...

    NoOb keg cleaning questions

FWIW, I don't use a sanitizer or a cleaner. I boil about a gallon of water, pour it into the keg, seal, shake like hell, and then use a picnic tap to vent some of the water through the diptube and liquid out. Haven't had an issue with infection or anything else. Found the suggestion from someone...

    Dry Hop Question

I don't think there's a hard and fast rule. I, and many others, dry hop in the keg and sometimes that means the beer is dry hopped for several weeks or more. Never been a problem for me so far, but then again I like all the hops I can get...

4th Consecutive Undrinkable Batch - Please Help!

I'm also still using the 5.2 PH stabilizer stuff. So I guess it's a combo of that and the acid that are lowering the PH. And maybe showing a little more patience before tasting and judging. I still detect a little bit of what turned me off, early in the aging process -- whether they are true off...

4th Consecutive Undrinkable Batch - Please Help!

Just a little update for anyone who happens upon this thread... I've brewed 5-6 all grain batches since and they were all definitely drinkable. A couple of them were even excellent. I've been watching my PH (bought a meter) and following ajdelange's advice (as linked by SC Ryan above) about...

QUICK noob question! What must be done to a wort chiller before using it???

If you've bought the coil new and washed/sanitized it, you should be good. Put it in the pot 15 min. before the end of the boil to re-sanitize it just before cooling use, and that's really all there is to it.

Portable kegerator: taps on front or top?

FWIW, I put the finished product in its own thread: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/my-portable-2-keg-bar-kegerator-258923/

    My Portable 2-Keg Bar/Kegerator

Thanks. It had a nice bird's eye veneer on the tower, but when I left it out to dry the plastic heated up and split the veneer, so black will have to do. Forgot to mention it's on casters as well, which is key.

    My Portable 2-Keg Bar/Kegerator

Finished up my portable homebrew kegerator a few weeks back and after taking it on its maiden voyage I figured I would share it with you kind folk. I've done the 1-keg in a cooler with CO2 injector and cobra tap thing and while that is handy, it's not the classiest looking way to bring beer to...

Portable kegerator: taps on front or top?

Thanks guys. The fleece is necessary right, I can't just paint fiberglass over the insulation?

Portable kegerator: taps on front or top?

I was planning to waterproof the inside, but hadn't finalized the details on that. Tentative idea was to buy a sheet of some plastic material, cut it into 4 sized panels, and then silicone the corners. In my head, the plastic would go *over* the insulation, not between the insulation and the...

Portable kegerator: taps on front or top?

I was just rolling this very idea through my head. Wouldn't have to be so modular, just removable. Then if I had a simple foam lid or something just to use during transport, I could put the tower lid on when I got to where I was going. Still struggling with an effective, non-powered way to...

Portable kegerator: taps on front or top?

So I'm in the process of building a portable 2-keg kegerator that will look nice enough for any style gathering, and hopefully still be light enough to not become a pain in the a**. I was all set to install the faucets on front, which while a little low for pouring would keep things simple and...

Nice job. I've been drawing up plans for something similar with actual faucets. Great to see it visualized.

Is there a hop doctor in the house?

How funny, a thread from last year with the exact same title shows almost the exact same problem. Consensus is fertilizer burn: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f92/there-hop-doctor-house-186561/

Is there a hop doctor in the house?

No, nothing hot near the plants, but we did have a guy powerwash our house about a week ago. Could some of his soap have done this? What's weird is that it seems to be continuing on newer leaves but perhaps it's just the fallout.
