New grower, asking harvesting and drying advice

Hops drying used to be a problem for me. Too many hops, not enough space. Check out this oast I made out of cardboard and cheap air filters. The box was from a recliner. I fold the box when not in use. The base was made from 2 x 2's and I put small casters on it to roll around and to create...

    Head space in SS growler

I got a 128oz and a 169oz stainless steel double walled growler for xmas and am ready to use for first time. I plan to carbonate with priming sugar and use the 16g CO2 mini tap just for serving. How much head space is needed for optimal carb?

    Mash debate

4.6 gallons. I am pretty consistent with hitting my target OG so I never thought to check it before ending the boil. I could have added some sugar or boiled it down longer if I new.

I try for 153*f and this time ended up at 150*f due to my cold brew day. I've had several 148*-150* mashes before and never have an issue.

No, but good thought. It was 70*f.

    Mash debate

I always plan for a 70% efficiency and usually get about 75%. Based on Brewers Friend, I should have got an OG of 1.065 and FG of 1.015. I used Nottingham Ale Yeast and the apparent attenuation given by BF is only 77%. But now you have me thinking... I didn't weigh the grains that AIH sent...

    Manual Sparge/Vorlauf diffuser ideas?

I currently use a hose from my HLT to the top of my mash tun where I have a 1/2" pvc pipe that goes through the lid of the mash tun. The pipe then tee's to several horizontal pipes with drilled holes in it. I control the flow from the HLT and it seems to drip evenly over the gain bed. I saw...

    Mash debate

The flakes were not crushed with the 2-row. I also had a very clean mash drain compared to my usual fight to filter out the grist.

No. I used my $10 hydrometer as I always have.

13 lbs of 2-row, 3.6 lbs of flacked corn and oats, 6.5 gal into fermenter, 1.055 OG, 1.023 FG... NBo BIAB. I sparge for at least 30 min. Thnx

    Mash debate

I just had my worst efficiency (59%) and attenuation (59%). I am debating to what the most likely cause was. 1) It was the first time I ordered my grains and dry Nottingham yeast online. I was a little suspicious about the grains being crushed at the right setting because I saw none of the...

Montana Am I missing something in NW Montana?

I recently moved to NW Montana and have been looking for a LHBS. Only thing close that I've seen is a health food store with a limited supply and high prices. With local breweries all around me, seems supplies would be easy to find. I am used to walking in to a MoreBeer and walking out with...

    Big mouth bubblers

I have two BMB with screw on lids. They work great. I love the ease of the valve and wide mouth for cleaning. Just use a soft sponge so not to scratch the plastic. I am worried that the sour beer I have in one of them now may have ruined it with wild yeast. Not sure how I'm going to...

    WLP655 Belgian Sour Mix 1

Like brewing itself, I jumped in to trying a sour beer before researching. As it now sits in my plastic Big Mouth Bubbler fermenting, I have questions. I ran across some info talking about these wild yeast and infections in future beers from old, wild yeast that won't die. Did I just...

    Mash time

I did BIAB this last year and fought poor efficiencies compared to tun/sparge. I was told on this forum by someone to try increasing mash time from 60 to 90 minutes. I was already squeezing bag and double crushing grains and was only getting in low to mid 60's. When I increased the mash time...

    Mash Tun question

"You might have to thicken up your mash a bit to fit your strike water and grain bill in the 5 gallon tun, but I was at 1.16 to 1 with that RIS and I didn't have any issues". laredo7mm, I've used 1:25 to 1 and fought stuck sparges. I increased that to 1:33 and it helped. Would lowering...

    Mash Tun question

Thanks jtratcliff, Although you inspire me to give BIAB another go someday (I do like the time it saves), my mash tun/sparge has always given me better results. I've double crushed, squeezed, and increased the soak time, idk. I'm not getting a lot of hits on the grain bed height question...

    Mash Tun question

I knew someone would say BIAB... I tried and can not get efficiencies that are consistant. It always ranges from 55% to 70% at best. Very hard to stick the recipe when you don't know how its going to turn out.
