    91% brewhouse efficiency!

Believe it or not, I hit this with batch sparging. This is only my 4th AG batch. I contribute this success to paying strict attention to temps (I only lost 2*) and my new monster mill. I was achieving 75 to 80% with my other batches before the mill. Here are the numbers: Grain bill: 6.5 lbs...

    rice hulls in wheat beer

Im going to make my first AG wheat beer in a couple of days and forgot to order rice hulls. The recipe is 60% wheat... do you think im going to have big problems with stuck sparges without the rice hulls?

    Coffee stout

Im going to brew a coffee stout tonight, but I want sure on how much coffee to use for a 5 gallon batch. Would 4 oz. be too much? I don't want it to be super over powering. Your help is appreciated.

    kraeusen wont fall

well it appears that the kraeusen is falling now, im going to wait till next week to rack to the secondary and dry hop. I havent checked the gravity again yet, but i cant believe that it could be lower than 1.012.

    FG 1.021: Safe to bottle?

You probably hit your final gravity, but to be sure check it tomorrow to see if it drops any more. if it hasn't it is probably safe to bottle. Your hydrometer is your best friend!

    kraeusen wont fall

I like to use a secondary because i much less sediment in my bottles. I also use fining in my secondary to make my beer clear using non flavored gelatin. I never mess with success, I've had good results using a secondary. My first few batches i didn't use one and let it set for 2 weeks in the...

    kraeusen wont fall

Thanks for the input, but has anyone ever had this happen? And if so, did you use this yeast? Im sure its nothing bad, I think it taste fine, just a little yeasty. needs to settle out in the secondary.

    kraeusen wont fall

I brewed an american amber last week (6 days ago) using wyeast 1272 american ale II. Fermentation took off quickly and appeared to slow considerably within 2 days. The darker layer on top of the foam fell and sank, but i still have a creamy white-ish foam on top still. It appears to be the yeast...

Who brews all they drink? Who still buys beer?

I like to buy sometimes to try different kinds... i dont have any one around that i know that brews, would be nice though, to have more variety. but i am the only one who drinks in my house so 5 gal goes along way so i dont have much variety in my own brews, about 3 types in any given time.

    Another first AG'er

Im just excited about my first AG batch. Everything went as i expected and hit my temps perfectly! And im asking myself: what the hell took me so long to do this! it was awesome, something about taking raw ingredients and making beer. I had a brewhouse efficiency of around 70% not bad for my...

    sparge water

I marked a rod prior to this batch with marks showing where 1, 2, 3 gal and so on comes to. it was about mid 50's to lower 60s today here. I did start boiling my runnings as i did my 2 batch sparges, but not a rolling boil.

    sparge water

    sorry i forgot this: preboil volume 7gal 1.046 @ 70 deg. F post boil volume 5 gal 1.062 @ 70 deg F

    sparge water

Thank you guys so much! My first AG batch was a success! I did get my pre boil volume perfect...7 gal. but i boiled out more than expected. i wanted 5.5 gal and ended up with 5 even (not bad) When i calculated my brew house efficiency i ended up with just over 70% not bad being my first ag batch...

    sparge water

Yes i am batch sparging. So will i get a 1.5 gal boil off in the 1 hour boil? If so: I want 5.5 gal. after boil so i will need 7 gal pre boil. 4.5 gal strike - 1.5 absorption = 3 gal, so i will need 4 gal of sparge? right. If so i will probably sparge with a extra half gal or so and boil it off...

    sparge water

I am doing my first AG batch this morning and was curious about the amount of sparge water to use. Palmer says in general to use 1.5 X as much as your strike water. I am making a 5.5 gallon batch using 13.5 lbs of grain. I want to mash at a 1.33 gal./lb. That means i will use 4.5 gal of strike...

    AG setup test

I didn't want to hear that. I was hoping to fly sparge to get better efficiency. But if im going to get channeling like this ill probably get in the lower 50% by flying with this setup.

    AG setup test

I ran a test today on my AG setup to test my technique and my system, because i want to run threw the procedure before i used the real malt. In my test i used crushed wheat (i got for free) to simulate the malt. I used dye in the sparge water so i can see if channeling is occurring (im glad i...

    EZ cap bottle problem

My wife was nice enough to buy me some EZ cap bottles (made in china) for me for my birthday...(i would of rather used the same money to buy grolsch beer and be able to drink the beer)...it was a nice thought though...any way they suck. the tops look quite thick but (as I found out when two...
