BrewCommander - Impressive offering from John

Nothing! Dave Knott at High Gravity had told me that the Boil Coil was ultra low watt density, and that used with the Brew Bag, would not scorch or burn the bag or grains as long as the coils were submerged. So yeah the bag touches the coils all around the circumference of the kettle with no...

    New BIAB rig

Recently bought this BIAB set up after doing plenty of research to find something that would be a good fit for my existing garage circuitry and batch sizes. High Gravity, Dave Knott, was a big help in choosing this system. I moved from induction burner to a 10gal 240v Blichmann G2 kettle...

BrewCommander - Impressive offering from John

This week I received my 10 gal 240v G2 kettle and the 240v Brew Commander. Assembly and leak test went well. I'll be using it for BIAB, and first batch should be Thusday or Friday this week. Controller seems very nice and very user friendly.

Whatcha got under those electric pots?

I just ordered a silicon pad from SS Brewtech. They sell a 10 gal size and 20 gal size. I bought the 20 gal size just to have extra under my 10 gal kettle.

A GFCI solution for existing non GFCI

I brew in the garage and have a 240v 20amp table saw circuit. I had been using a induction burner, but making a switch to a Blichmann 10 gal 240v electric kettle and their Brew Commander controller. I thought I'd have to get the electrician in to upgrade my circuit until I found these inline...

BrewCommander - Impressive offering from John

Yes, I'm counting on my boil coil and the BC extension cable to be plenty long enough so my kettle will be under my pulley at one end of my workbenches and the BC at the other. My riptide could then be in the center, so that once whirlpooling and chilling are done, I can pump from the kettle...

Install 1/2 inch tee going into your mesh ton and put the probe in the tee might solve it.

BrewCommander - Impressive offering from John

Yesterday ordered the 10 gal 240v G2 kettle with whirlpool port added and the 240v BC. I have a 20amp 240v receptacle that I'll use but isn't GFCI protected, so I found an inline GFCI whip on Amazon that I just need to wire the proper connection to the L6-30 plug from the BC and then the 6-20p...

    PH Meter value question

I have an Apera ph meter. I think it was $79, and it's quite good IMO. I've used benchtops in labs that were harder to calibrate and use. It also has a replaceable probe.

    BIAB Recirculation Pump

I have the little brown pump for pumping wort to the fermenter, but wanted more flow for whirlpooling. I got the Blichmann Riptide pump in yesterday and will wet test today for leaks and flow control. The pump has a built in flow control on the output side and I've installed a ball valve on the...

BrewCommander - Impressive offering from John

I've been looking at both the Brew Commander paired with a 10 gal G-2 electric kettle or the SS Brewtech 1v controller and a SS 10gal kettle. I do BIAB and it seems like the more costly SS 1v combo would be more bag friendly than the Blichmann because of the temp probe/thermocouple location. I...

    Stuck mash. Need help

I turn off my heat when I mash BIAB. Yes, I'm guessing the flaked oats and wheat would have contributed to the recirc problem. Rice hulls, sound like they would help. If I do need to add a touch of heat when mashing I don't leave my kettle intended and stir everything up well while I'm raising...

Pitching at 80 F then cooling down after fermentation starts bad for beer??

I often chill to 80 when ground temps are warm and then pump into my fermenter in the mini fridge. I usually chill to about 72 and pitch the yeast. After a few hours I'll set the the inkbird for 65. In the morning I'll make any final adjustments if needed. Seems to work fine but I always try to...

Bottles in Starsan - how long?

True dat! I rinse my bottles with a drop of unscented 7th generation soap, flush and store on the bottle tree and then sanitize right before bottling.

What @wilserbrewer says. I go back and forth and or side to side to stir the mash.

No, mine doesn't twist at all when stirring. I used to use 4 of those spring bookbinder clasps on it but then the top wouldn't sit flush. I now just run a cord through my straps where they hang over the side of the kettle and tie the cord snugly and everything stays in place, plus the top fits...

Each to his own preference for sure, but I find the handles super easy to use and while not familiar with other ratcheting pulleys, mine has a string attached to the release trigger so it doesn't matter at all how high you hoist.

Yes, a brew bag. I don't do many big beers, but have done a Dubbel and a strong pale ale that were 7.9%, which are BIG beers for me. Most of what I brew will run in the 5.9- 6.5% range.
