    Cold Crashing

How long do you guys cold crash? Doing an ale, bottling soon, gonna give it a shot. thanks

Are bottle conditioning and secondary conditioning the same thing?

Along the same line of thinking, not meant to be thread hijack, is cold crashing your secondary the same as chilling your beer for drinking? My assumption is that both work but the crashed bottles will have sediment?

    Secondary, a strange twist

I do keep the bottle cloaked in a nice dark cover to keep the sun off it.

    Secondary, a strange twist

I racked to a secondary, yes despite suggestions here, after 2 weeks and the primary slowed/stopped. I moved the carboy about 3 feet from where the primary sat and now 3 days later the beer is still bubbling like a champ. Weird? When the wort went into the primary I did aerate, temp was...

    My first brew concern..

ok ok ok....summarily punished. Above facts noted.:) Impatient?? perhaps. So I can't ignore the science and purely go by the directions? huh, who'da thunk it. as a follow up, the air lock is bubbling like a champ again.

    My first brew concern..

My amber ale yeast beer has been in primary since 1/3, starting was 1.045, a reading at 1/13 was 1.022, today's reading (1/18) was 1.020. I moved to a secondary because I'm aiming for a clear beer, wife likes clear beer. Should I be concerned with the slowness of the reading? Or just chill and...

    First Brew is Going.....

I have my first batch in primary for 9 days now, when I capped it I had the whole family on bubble watch. I was fortunate and it was popping nicely in 8 hours, woke the family with my enthusiasm. In about 36 hours it slowed and now I'm guessing it occasionally bubbles. I haven't seen it go...

Next stupid newbie question: Taking a gravity reading

Took my first reading today, 8 days in, numbers dropped from 1.045 to 1.022. I slurped it down, not bad, tasted like a good beer. FG is supposed to be 1.010-1.012. I'll take another reading in 6 days. I used a wine thief, worked well. I sanitized it, and anything else that may cause an issue...

    First brew...done. Nice.

8 days in I took my first reading, 1.022, its down from 1.045. The aroma was very pleasant, the color a nice amber, some flotsam on top, and it tasted like a nice beer, yes. The beer was cloudy, as expected.

Do you have to be a hop head to appreciate craft brews?

Gotta ask......hop forward, malt forward, what does that mean? Thanks for the education

    First brew...done. Nice.

at what point do you guys take your first reading from the fermenter? so if I leave it in the primary, minimal 2 weeks maybe to hit FG, then when thats determined 2-3 days for clearing? I really want a clear beer, so I don't have to hear......but its cloudy....from the wife. She likes clear...

    First brew...done. Nice.

What is an average time to hit FG? Then you use the secondary strictly for clearing?

    First brew...done. Nice.

I steeped the grains at 155 for 30 minutes, its the first picture. It worked well instant color with the dip. I kept a close eye on the temp, with a bit of fluctuation, 155-158. I then took it off the heat, added the extract, stirred, back on the heat and stirred a lot more. Hit rolling boil in...

    First brew...done. Nice.

I brewed a Midwest Supply extract kit, Autumn Amber Ale, that came with the kit. I had some trepidation, silly. Now I understand all the comments about drinking before its time, before the brewing I thought c'mon its only 3 weeks, now maybe a week.....lol One issue I had was trying to read the...

    First brew...done. Nice.

Started about 11 AM, in the primary, cleaned up by 3. The day really went well, last minute decision delayed the start. I ran out and grabbed some new sponges, 4 gallons of distilled water, and a spray bottle. Two gallons went into the freezer for cooling, 2+ gallons were mixed for Star San...

Intimidating brewing, sheesh (noob first post)

Hey mbp! good to see you check in, snow has my delivery delayed, hopefully tomorrow. I'm looking at a wine thief and the vinator, figure they would both be great to have. Can't beat another hobby with a lot of stuff to check out
