    yeast starter=pain

This was my first starter, followed directions from the my LHBS, I used 1/2 pound of DME, a dash of yeast nutrient, and 900 ml water. Irish ale yeast, wet. I boiled in the beaker, chilled it to proper temp, added yeast. By morning a bit messy. I think I handled it well, quick change from the...

    Basil T's brewery

My second stop to a brewery now that i am a home brewer:p. Its a fun thing to do. Did a flight, their stout is killer, they also have a tasty wheat that is very drinkable. Grabbed a growler of the wheat. A nice beer for a Sunday afternoon. They have a nice German growler with the Grolsch type...

A picture of my setup now, after the overflow. I was planning on brewing tomorrow. Do any of you see any problems? And no I don't have a gravity starting read. That is star san its dumping into.

    yeast starter=pain

Holy YEASTIES!, woke up this morning to see wort all over the counter. Quick clean up, star sanning everything. Plug the bung in the beaker......bubble out again. A quick grab of the 3/8 hose, out with the airlock, in with the hose after a good star san spray and dip. The other end goes into the...

    yeast starter=pain

Another first for me, a yeast starter. The prep went well, to much water in the beeker, I had to grab the old baster and suck some out as the boil kicked in. I had a baby boil over. Getting it down to the temp range was a process, down, to much, up, to much, finally in the range 70-80...

Seriously the easiest DIY ever for bottling bucket dip tube

I picked up an elbow and found the spigot to be so near the bottom that the elbow was to long. I'll cut a bit off and refit it, so there is about 1/8 inch between the elbow and bucket bottom. The cut edge may have to be treated with a torch for that nice shiny finish, only have .93 invested.

    wet yeast fears

WLP004 Irish Ale Yeast This is the yeast from one of the oldest stout producing breweries in the world. It produces a slight hint of diacetyl, balanced by a light fruitiness and slight dry crispness. Great for Irish ales, stouts, porters, browns, reds and a very interesting pale ale...

    Kane Brewery

A Carton trip is next. 4 for $4 is a good price for a nice size taste at a fledgling brewery. The place was busy Friday and I took some friends on Saturday, nice crowd then too. and now the growler is empty

    Kane Brewery

Through conversations here I found Kane Brewery in Ocean Twsp. Stopped in last night and back today. A pretty cool place, little bar, beer flight 4 for $4, growlers sold and filled, working brewery you can walk around. Good beer, I brought home a growler of Single Fin. A nice stop.

    First brew lessons/thoughts

I mixed up the minimum amount of Star San, still had 2 gallons and a spray bottle full, used it liberally through the whole brew process. I can't see keeping it around for another brew process its so inexpensive and goes a long way. While popping the lid on the fermenter I forced some water...

    First brew lessons/thoughts

Its been racked, its conditioning, some thoughts on things I learned. 1. You guys are adamant about no need to secondary 2. Need a 3 piece airlock, easier to clean 3. Vodka in the airlock 4. Cold crash worked pretty good 5. Star san is a great product 6. Bottle trees are nice to have 7...

    First brew...done. Nice.

Bottled today, it went well, somewhat disappointed with the quantity. I ended up with about 4.25 gallons. I have it in an open cooler in the basement. Have to check on temp to see if it stays there. Cleaned up, sanitized all the stuff. I have to add, cleaning the Better Bottle was no big deal...

    Cold Crashing

Pulled the carboy out of the fridge, 3 days at 36 degrees, or so. This is what I found on the bottom.

    Bottling...priming sugar...oh NO!

Not that dramatic but I did have an oh no moment. Bottled today, first batch, all went well, then I tasted the remaining beer left in the bucket, way sweet. I did the priming sugar boil and poured all the syrup into the empty bottling bucket. Will the filling of the bucket with the wort dilute...

    First brew...done. Nice.

I have no complaints with them. Their shipping seems a bit pricey, but I like the company. That said I believe in supporting the local businesses and Brewers Apprentice is 10 minutes from home, so most of my post brew kit buys will be there. Nothing like walking into a shop and smelling that...

    Cold Crashing

Its all part of the experiment, playing with the recipe that came with the kit, I'll do a few things different next time, soon.

    Cold Crashing

Reached FG 1.010. Cold crash today, 48 hours, bottle on Monday. This has been a great experiment each step, for the first time.
