    Primary fermentors for starters?

Just curious, has anybody tried simply using your primary fermenter for creating your starter? Seems like it would be very convienent and less opportunity for break downs in your sanitation process. You would simply go straight from the kettle on top of the starter.... A couple of...

    Dark Dark Stout water?

Whoa! that is important info. Thanks for posting. Lucky for me I have an experienced AG'er who advised using a "lighter hand" with the baking soda / chalk additions. So far all my stouts have had great conversion and great taste even though I wasn't matching the exact RA in Palmer's...

    How to save a starter?

I kicked off a 2 qt starter on Sunday in preparation for brewing yesterday (Tuesday). Things came up and I had to cancel my brew day. :( Now it will likely be about 2 weeks before I can get back to it (travel, etc). Should I just leave the starter alone (at room temp with foil on the lid)...

Equal gravities in two fermentors (10 gallon batch)

What I meant was that I got alot of trub (from the hop pellets) in one fermentor and very little in the other.

Equal gravities in two fermentors (10 gallon batch)

No. I have done this once and did get a lopsided amount of hops in one verse the other. But, I was relieved to find the gravities were equal. I thought I had just gotten lucky and that by trying (unsuccessfully) to whirlpool I had kept the wort properly mixed. So, when is stratification a...

Equal gravities in two fermentors (10 gallon batch)

I did a search, but couldn't find an answer. When draining my 10 gal keggle into (2) seperate 6 gal fermentors, what do I do to make sure that I get equal gravities in each bucket? If I am whirlpooling, will that solve it? how fast will stratification re-occur (i.e. how often do I need to...

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

UPDATE: ATT = 74% (WLP-004). That's 3 month old yeast. According to Mr. Malty viability should have been around 10% with my sample. Probably still under pitched, but it definitely did the job. peace :rockin:

Waiter...there's a fly in my wort

So I was preparing a starter in advance of brew day. I was done boiling and had just concluded that the wort was cooled enough for pitching when......a fly dive bombs right into the pot:mad: So, giving in to my fears. I fished him out, put the pot back on the burner and starter over. But...

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

I am adding this just as a data point for others using this method: I just used my first "washed yeast" collected using the steps outlined in this thread. The pitched example looked exactly as pictured in OP (the 1/2 pt jar on the right). I estimate that I had about 5ml of slurry. The...
