    Slanting yeast

yo Sacc! Great thread and many thanks. quick question (sorry if I missed it). Wondering why you don't use sterile wort when mixing your agar? Only DME. Any reason? You obviously have it on hand (as do I). thanks! JR

Mixing old beer and new beer...

Very very cool. Just last week I was thinking about an experiment like this becasue I have about 2 gallons of Eng Barley Wine from Oct 09, that is simply too sweet for my taste. I actually tested mixing it with a bottle of pale lager I had on hand at various ratios (25/75, 50/50). Very...

Pitching on a cake - advice needed

There has been some really good info in this thread. I for one am going to buy the "Practical Guide to Yeast" book suggested earlier, sounds like a great read. At the risk of passing on my bad habits..... If you are looking for Safety against over-pitching, then wash it first and use a...

Pitching on a cake - advice needed

There are alot of ways to go here. I agree that the additional liquid yeast and starter for the Barleywine is not needed. If it were me, I would simply dump the barleywine right on top of the yeast cake and be done with it. To me, the second biggest advantage of re-using the yeast cake...

Anyone use WL 820 ..if so what is your experience ?

As a comparison point, I just lagered my second ever Octoberfest. This time I used WLP-833 and pitched onto the yeast cake from a previous batch of Munich Helles. It reached teminal gravity in about 8 days. I lagered/kegged it on day 12 and the sample tasted really clean for such a young...

Anyone use WL 820 ..if so what is your experience ?

SSSSSLLLLLLLLOOOOOOWWWWWWWW Even after using a starter. Pitched at 50F and held there for most of the fementation (I raised is slightly near the end for a D-Rest). It took a full 32 days to reach target FG. But it did make a great Octoberfest. I have never had a lager yeast take so long.

Is Beersmith the best software for custom recipes?

Perfect analogy! Designing Great Beers is a must for anyone interested in AG. I used the formulas there to build my own custom excel based brewing spreadsheet. It calculates all my temps, volumes, etc. I also use it calculate grain weights for importing other receipes (very basic really)...

First Lager Brew day (Maibock) Help!!

Before I upgraded to a chest freezer and temp controller, I had good luck placing my fermentor in a ice chest full of water and then adding frozen water bottles as needed. I live in TX, so getting too cold was never the problem. Do you self a favor a place the ice chest in a area of the...

    Clone SN Tumbler...Help!

Finally my results: I can't say its a clone because I definitely missed the color. Next time I will use Cry 30-40L (instead of 10L). Kinda of a pale brown. But damn it is good and taste pretty spot on to my lips. I agree with ghpeel, I think SN's has a bit more hop flavor. But without...

    Clone SN Tumbler...Help!

I kegged my attempt yesterday (receipe below): It needs to carbonate still, so too early to compare. Color is definitely off as its much lighter than Tumbler. It tasted amazing though. May have under done the smoke, really can't detect it at all (yet). I am heading out of town on...

    Another temperature question

Welcome back. :rockin: There are plenty here with alot more experience than me, but I will hazzard to say that a rule of thumb might be tough to find. Each yeast strain is different and you will need to experiment to find your own tastes preference. I will say, however, that I don't...

Stupidest thing you ever did brew related

Back in my extract days, I used to submerge the extract container in hot water so it would be easier to pour. I would do in this our laundry room. So I start to fill the sink....get distracted...leave the room and go about other chores, heating water yada yada. bout 10 mins later it...

Hello Electric Brewers!!! Need some help...please

conducted some more search of the forum. Looks like the exposed base of the elements needs to be covered with either food grade 1) silicone or 2) high temp paint. there is also this sacrificial anode option that I need to look into..... thanks

Hello Electric Brewers!!! Need some help...please

Yeah that sounds like it. Now, how to prevent? I cut the hole for the element such that the element threads would screw in to the keg. Not sure how to prevent them from coming into contact..... ....help......:(

Hello Electric Brewers!!! Need some help...please

I am wrapping the my Electric HLT project. I only have 110v, so I am using a 1500W element controlled by a Ranco unit. But my heating element seems to be rusting??? My overall goal is to prepare my strike water the night before brew day and run my Ranco off a timer that will start heating...
