Need an Extract Recipe For Vanilla Nut Brown Ale

Hey Fran, funny you should ask, because my Vanilla Almond Brown Ale (Bouncin' Betty Brown Ale) is just finishing up bottle conditioning. Here's what I used: 6 Lbs. Light Extract .5 lbs. Dextrin (CaraFoam) Malt .5 Lbs. Carastan (Crystal) Malt .3 Lbs. Victory Malt .08 lbs. Black Patent...

    Newbie question about cloudiness...

Hey DW...I wouldn't worry too much about filtering in the sense of runnign your beer through one. With my last batch, I tried cold filtering. With the weather being as cold as it's been up here, I racked a brown ale over to a secondary and put it in my attic for about a week. The cold temps...

    Beer Kit....no instructions!

Adds a little bit of creaminess to the beer. I decided against using it in my brown ale, but I'm interested in how yours' turns out.....

What is your favorite commerical beer?

Boddingtons is interesting......it's a pale golden ale in a can w/ a nitro widget in it. So you end up w/ this crisp light golden ale w/ a Guinness head on it.......

    Alcohol Testing Device

Best I could find is a hydrometer w/ a Potential Alcohol scale on it. A scale on the hydrometer which treats the estimated sugar content as "pre-alcohol." As fermentation continues, the alcohol content (by volume) can be estimated by subtracting the current potential alcohol reading from the...

    Slurry ferment - Cover Blastoff!

That's exactly what my Russian Imperial was doing. I gave up, popped the top off, and set up some towels around the base of the fermenter. There was so much CO2 coming out, nothing else could get in. I left it like that overnight. By the morning, it had settled down enough to replace the lid...

    Bottling and 'cold filtering?'

Hey there! OK, cold filtering, as I've done it, is basically letting your secondary sit for about a week in much colder temps. For me, it was up in my attic space. With the weather the way it's been lately, getting cold temps isn't a problem. After bottling though, I'd put them in a dark...

    This Beer Sucks, IMO

After poking around a bit, I'm pretty sure you're right. I think the sweet's more for the holiday witner brews....

    This Beer Sucks, IMO

    aging

I was thinking fo throwing some medium toast chips into my IPA when I brew it. From what I can firgure, I steam-sanitize then, and dump about .5 oz. into my primary fermenter....sound right?

    This Beer Sucks, IMO

    Ban Smoking in Bars??

I'll end it......it's not right vs. left in this country...it's top vs. bottom......done. :D

    fruit/etc in primary vs secondary

I think the reason for the secondary addition is because there's a lot less activity going on there. More chance for the fruit flavors to come through and not get fermented away. I added a vanilla bean to my secondary on my brown ale and it REALLY comes through. The last batch I brewed up...

    Music!

What really kicked my love...ok obsession...with music into overdrive was *truly* discovering the blues. I used to think 'I'm too happy to listen to/play the blues...' Couldn't be farther from the truth. I think Blues is one of the few forms out there that expresses happiness, sadness, and...

    Imperial Stouts

Heh..the one I brewed recently. It's strong as hell! So strong, that you probably shouldn't have a full 12 oz. bottle and plan on doing anything for the rest of the night. It's got a good stout taste...the only complaint I've got about it is that the alcohol bite is right up in your face...

I have the bare basics down... next step?

No worries about the wort not foaming up that much. Mine hardly does, if I'm doing a kit recipe. The one time it really foamed up was when I made my Imperial Stout, but then again, that was like 10 lbs. of malt. I mean, if you really wanna see it foam, cover your brewpot. Heheheh....just...

Bottles of Beer Lay on side in Fridge?

Heh....reminds of the time this last summer when me, my guitar player, and my drummer went out to this club/bar in Providence. We camped out and consumed bucketas of Rolling Rock all night. For $9 a bucket, you can't go wrong. Point being, all it takes is for one person to start that bottle...

    carboys

It's not really a plastic taste at all.....My brew bucket seems to be retaining all the wonderful smells of past batches....I'm fearing these will transfer to subsequent batches in the future.....
