    My first fat tire

1554 is by far my fave from NB....(Here is my conspiracy theory, folks) but back in the day when I lived in Fort Collins (1993-1996), I loved Fat Tire, couldn't get enough, until, well, either I did, or something changed... I stopped drinking it (and most commercial beers) when I started...

    Thinking of moving to Colorado

I have lived in Colorado for 19 years.....I suggest getting a job before you move. I have lived in FtC, Denver, Aurora, Highlands Ranch, and a brief spell in in the Springs. If you have work, any of those places are fine. My favorite for beer but not jobs was FtC....if I found decent work...

OK, I'll admit it. I will probably never brew an IPA.

I had thought about the same thing (brewing a batch for my occasional hankering), but it is the fresh hop flavor and aroma that goes first, and this is what I actually like about the APA and AIPA styles, not necessarily the actual bitterness.....(and why I order/buy one occasionally). I feel...

OK, I'll admit it. I will probably never brew an IPA.

There's nothing wrong with liberal doses of hops in beers, but..... I can't sanction the more=better=bigger=better=more excessive compulsive american mindset. Fins were great on cars, up until 1959 when the Cadillac was just ridiculous. In the beer world we (american big brewers) went Light...

Brewing TV - 10 - Cascadian Dark Ale Debate

I would hate to be so rigid, but I think that as brewers (ie scientists and artists) we can use the Cascadian and Inida(n) (or Noonanian, if you'd like) descriptors interchangeably to denote the emphasis of hops in any style like we do with the "double" and "Imperial" monikers (and Baltic to a...

Brewing TV - 10 - Cascadian Dark Ale Debate

I vote Cascadian Dark Ale. If Cascadia becomes a country, I am moving there. BIPA is stupid (it isn't pale), the American Style India Black ale or whatever is also dumb....what does it have to do with India? The beer is known for american hops (many varieties grown in cascadia).... I am all...

Beer in Denver and surrounding areas (weekend trip)

I am not a fan of Pint's (the beer nor the owner....not a super friendly fellow)....the beer isn't much better. My fave not already mentioned is the Denver Chop house....Kevin the brewer also does nice tours if asked nicely (next to Coor's field, very close to Wynkoop and Brek downtown, and...

    ingredients and taxes

Thank you AHS....this is what I think....I should not be charged tax on my malt, sugar, etc. at the homebrew store....my guess is that either the lhbs isn't aware, or is too lazy to change their computer or apply for exemption, or has been collecting taxes for the government that they...

    ingredients and taxes

This has been bothering me for a short while. Going to the home brew store, if I buy malted barley, corn sugar, bitter orange peel, extract, and coriander, I am charged our state plus local sales tax of 8.1% (or so) on all of the food ingredients of making beer. If I go to the grocery...

Do you pitch on previous beer's yeast cake?

I do it a few times a year when I plan on using the same yeast for successive batches. I think I have done it on the same cake up to 4 times. I was not going for a record, the beers I were making all benefited from the same yeast. Needless to say, I tend to reuse American and British Ale...

    Homebrewing too popular???

Homebrewing ebbs and flows with craft beer.....if you remember the early 90's there were an explosion of microbreweries (many poor quality) and that was about the time I got into brewing....then a lot of the breweries went away and the best ones thrived. A lot of homebrewers went away too (and...

Sanitizing in dishwasher - A cautionary tale

it is my understanding that using dishwasher detergent is bad (as bad as using soap) as it leaves a trace of film that negatively affects head retention. The heat of the dishwasher is the sanitizing part, I wouldn't count on the dishwasher to do the cleaning. I do make sure my bottles are...

    Storing empty bottles

I store mine indoors, but how about just storing them upside down in their case/pack containers. Whatever goes in, eventually goes or falls out.

Sanitizing in dishwasher - A cautionary tale

I am a longtime dishwasher as bottle sanitizer user. I have been known to add bleach to the wash cycle, but lately (last 20 or so batches) have been lax with the bleach....I run the full heavy wash with hot hot water and then the sani-rinse and dry option....the bottles are too hot to handle...

Why is it so frikkin hard to buy a broken keg??

How about this? Find a liquor store that does a lot of keg sales and scour their returned kegs for ones from a defunct brewery? If the brewery no longer exists, is the keg owned by anyone? It this like taking home an orphaned kitten?

Why is it so frikkin hard to buy a broken keg??

I have had the same problem, the encouragement to pay the deposit and walk away....and don't ask, don't tell. I have resisted doing this, and continue my search. As for sabco, it doesn't make sense to me to order a keg from across the country when I have so many breweries in my...

Easy Readability and durability in Hydrometers

Thanks to many about their opinions. To Spanish Castle Ale: If the expensive one from CP is still hard to read, what is better about it? Is it more durable? To Beernik: I discount refratometers because they are more difficult (or can't be used) to use with finished beer, right? But, you make...

Easy Readability and durability in Hydrometers

OK, so I broke my el-cheapo hydrometer again. How many is that now? Many over the years. I am thinking of trying something a little more expensive, but I need opinions. I am thinking of getting a scientific hydrometer from Cole Parmer or someplace that reads in 1.0005 increments and only...

    Better beer or easier beer?

Kegging might be nice, I don't know, I never bothered with it. I am a 20 year brewer, went to all grain 10 years ago. I think my beer is better, but I build it for me, and that is the benefit of having the control of AG. I like the physical nature of bottling....recycling bottles and...

What do people do when their hops get too tall?

I was told that training them up diagonally will work....I am trying that (I too am a first year grower), but I can see from your pic that although you live two miles from me your hops are doing much much better than mine (mine are just going over 1.5-2 feet now).
