    recipe Critique

Imho, hop selection is a bit muddled. Pick two besides the Apollo that complement each other. Otherwise it might end up being this big beer with "hops". Ella and pacifica from your list should compliment nicely. Or Vic secret and citra. Maybe it doesn't matter in such a big beer. But, imhp...

Maybe the ABInBev haters can let up

Don't misconstrue this is as some sort of Christian altruism. This is the marketing department using 0.05% of their budget.

Maybe the ABInBev haters can let up

They've been doing this for large disaster relief for decades. It's a great gesture. Doesn't mean squat with regards to their heavy hand approach to the beer market.

Is there a way to fill growlers without degassing keg?

I don't think aromatics that escape solution are ever really re-absorbed. Imho, popping the poppet isn't the problem. Anyway, you can rig up a cobra tap with a long hose and a racking cane jammed in the end to add resistance (friction) and cut the pressure at the outlet end.

    Game of Thrones

Great episode... But now I owe Homercidal beer!

    Black Malts

Imho, yes. The simpler the beer, the more noticeable the bitterness. You really really want to use dehusked carafa or blackprintz or midnight wheat. My Dark cream ale has one ounce of chocolate in a three gallon batch...you can tell.

    Flame out extract

That works as long as you're letting it cool enough first. Real hot liquid and plastics aren't a real good idea. Besides thermal deformation you will leach out undesirable chemicals.

    Flame out extract

I actually use a 4 lb can of Alexander's pale LME. 4# LME + 1/4# sugar makes a good 1.050 beer in a 3 gallon batch. I use plain sugar if I'm using fruity hops; turbinado if I'm using resiny/dank hops. Quite tasty and super easy. The Alexander's LME is good in my book. I've pulled off...

Old beer faucet, what's it made of

I was talking about old brass faucets alluded to in the op... long before we were importing from China. Old brass was commonly 10-20% lead. Relax bub. Nothing warrants personal attacks around here.

Why my local brewery shut down

I cam think of some locals that i wish would close due to quality BUT you can get by quite easily if you mostly serve pints rather than distribute only. The production/ wholesale/ distribution model is really tough now. To2y need some really strong brands power and above average beer as well...

Old beer faucet, what's it made of

10-20% lead would be my guess.

    Game of Thrones

But when the technicalities take over the stories, you might as well read the spoilers and commiserate with the guys at the pub.

    Game of Thrones

I think the undead dragon will breath more shortcuts for the writers, for at least 3 episodes.

Home Depot bucket used by LHBS for weighing grain

Dry grain is not going to leach anything out of the bucket. My uncle was just telling about a professor he was sitting next to on a flight. He's a chemistry professor at a local university. He's working with some grad students on the leaching of chemicals from plastics. He said he'd never...

    Game of Thrones

yes, true. the books are written more like a historic record than a drama. but they're taking a lot of liberties. They should just kill of more people so that they don't have to cram so much. :)

    Game of Thrones

The sacrifices they make in logic to get their story milestones in is really starting to get to me. Arya is so quick to judge her sister without even recognizing that her sister didn't ask little finger to get and hide the note. Sansa just last episode talked about what a sneak little finger...

Dirt cheap, motorized, miniature, roller mill

You need to expand this to include a conveyor and a sieve to separate out the husks. Maybe a mister too upstream of the mill to better keep the husk together during the crush.

    Swiss lager, s-189

WL website says "This method works well without forming high amounts of esters because most esters are produced after the first 12 hours." The ideal condition is the cold pitch. My point was its likely strain dependent. And if you're trying to brew award winning beer, I'd stick to the...

    Swiss lager, s-189

Well that's odd since Chris White's and Jamil's book says the optimum pitch temp is 1-2 degrees below your target fermentation temp. This is right after a few pages discussing yeast stress. I imagine lower temp variations resume in less noticeable effects but the science is clear...and the...

    Flame out extract

I hit my chiller with a squirt bottle of Starsan. All extract can go in at flameout. You don't need any extract to isomerize the alpha acids in the hops. The only concern is pH and i haven't had a problem. I like making a simple extract IPA with DME. Get water to boil. Turn off heat. As...
