    Facelift for my control panel

I dont quite remember but it was very cheap I had the DC power supply already so just needed the omron 2 pole relays and the 4 port thermister board from brucontrol as well as the mega. Id say it all cost me about $75 with the enclosure from home depot.

    Temp Control Glycol Chiller

They did run on stc1000 type hysterisis controllers and yes its easy to swap out the BC relay and temp probe to take over temp control.

    Temp Control Glycol Chiller

I have a couple a regular chillers I did this with at both home and the brewery.. I use brucontrol to control the thermostat in one of them and I have them both setup to use the chillers built in pump but you could easily control any pump or pumps with it. I see no reason it wouldnt work with a...

    Glycol chiller

Theres not much too a chiller honestly.. usually like a fridge the most common failure is a cheap starter for the compressor. some have a pressure switch which can fail. I have a 6th one sitting in my back seat right now I repaired by bypassing it (also less than a year old)... Did penquin say...

    Rims system scorching

what was the mash grain bill? there wasnt any rye was there? I agree 5500w elements really need to be ULWD to lessen the chance of scorching with the low flow speed of a typical 5-10gallon setup.. it sounds like you might not even have a lwd element... one easy fix would be to use the pid...

Why are brewing controllers so expensive?

yes but my 2200w 240v elements draw about 9-10 amps... keep in mind , elements arent always quite as powerful as the rated markings stamped on them.

Why are brewing controllers so expensive?

True but in the least you want 240v breakers where the poles are tied together mechanically in some fashion to prevent brown out type situations. I thing for many, Much of the cost comes with making the design cosmetically appealing. The pic of my old panel in my avatar photo was after I...

Why are brewing controllers so expensive?

:off: Ive done a lot of filing and polishing contactor contacts in my life.. I am exactly the same way, couldnt afford to call in the pros in most cases for a very long time so I always try to do it myself which is whats responsible for the skills I acquired as a kid for my career. I restored an...

Why are brewing controllers so expensive?

Dont forget also that thse companies with these expenses are certainly buying the components in bulk and often paying much less in wholesale prices for the components than the average consumer. As a field engineer who installs and services large machinery I have an idea of what kind of markups...

Why are brewing controllers so expensive?

Or better yet, build your own as many here do. Then you have the advantage of not worrying about support from the manufacturer when something fails down the road or you want to make a change or upgrade.

Why are brewing controllers so expensive?

Especially in the cases where they are building them out of a garage or have no actual liability insurance to speak of.. my earlier comments were about assembled control panels (and mostly the same copied designs at that) built out of off the shelf components... I can see custom made components...

Thoughts on best glycol chiller: SS Brewtech vs. Penguin vs. Any others? (Not diy)

I'm going to chime in and say I don't believe hp ratings are universal since we use the micromatic 1/3hp beerline chiller to control temps on all four of our 110gallon conicals and it maintains temps on all four perfectly fine and we even cold crash one at a time down to 40 degrees.

    Used kegs v new kegs

It dropped back down.. the crazy high deposit rule did not have the desired effect they were going for.. people were returning the kegs but fewer were buying them too so they reverted to older deposit prices. To be fair one reason we dont currently sell kegs of beer is I hear stories from other...

    pH meter recommendations, please?

unless theres some special probe im unaware of, people who are just sticking the ph meter into the mash likely dont know what they are doing. Even ph probes that are rated for high temps will have a dramatically shortened probe life by subjecting them to high temps. There are different types of...

    Used kegs v new kegs

The larger breweries likely pay around $50 each for the kegs new (Not saying I agree with keeping them) but we've bought brand new kegs for as little as $65 each for our brewpub..

    pH meter recommendations, please?

We use a milwaukee 102 meter at the brew pub. At first I was not impressed but then I discovered I had a poor probe and after buying a better replacement for $40 on amazon its been rock solid for almost a year now. (we do always run our samples under cold water to cool as mentioned above) As far...

    Neoprene Jackets

1.5" blue discharge hose wrapped around the outside of the connicals a few times makes a very effective Jacketed fermenter... added a couple layers of bubble wrap insulation. the conical walls got frost on them when I tested empty.. heres where I got the idea, best part is no coils or fittings...
