    Spunding - new frontier

20 PSI and holding sounds great! Please report back once this batch has had time to crash/lager/whatever-ciders-do. I have used pressure to suppress ester formation when fermenting a lager at room temp with good results. I'm curious if there will be any flavor changes (for good or ill) that...

    Dusting off the cobwebs

I have made DIY PBW as referenced by the very helpful HBT link. ;) TL;DR - In a pinch OXY-Clean FREE (no ink, dyes or perfumes) can suffice with fairly hot 150F water for a good soak, then a good rinse. If you are able to source some TSP/90 (sodium metasilicate) from Ace Hardware or similar...

How many malts do you need in a recipe?

A 2nd for the three or four malts per recipe, generally. The wild ones with multiple 1% and 2% additions are for when I'm clearing out stock and making a "stone soup" brew!

    Megamouth Torpedo Ball Lock Kegs

I have one of the standard lid 6.1gal torpedo kegs. Fantastic fermenter, all I use. Can fill 23L at right around gas post height. I drop 21L wort in to ferment, have 2L-ish headspace and end up with 19L into serving keg. These megamouth versions are also 23L so I would expect similar...

disparity between wine makers and beer makers

Well folks.... you've got me thinking that I <definitely> need to get my mead friend going on a sweet red!

disparity between wine makers and beer makers

Live in Boone, work in Saylorville (soon Ankeny), originally from NW Iowa (Kingsley). I have a friend up in Marquette who has taken me on local honey runs for his various meads. He started out like many with bulk "Sue Bee" blended honey, which was okay, but wanted to play with the terroir. ;)...

    Adapter from commercial sanke coupler

What is displayed would be the simplest way to dispense taproom sanke keg to corny keg provided you had a gas line that terminated with a grey ball lock QD. The beer/bev side is just a black-to-black jumper line. I have seen folks use in-line gas QDs in their keezers, perhaps similar could be...

disparity between wine makers and beer makers

Thanks for this explanation. It's common sense but I never really took into account the seasonality of sugar sources for wine must, even using locally sourced "wild" berries (mulberry, raspberry, etc). Malted grains can be purchased dry, and store for months. I do all grain, so this means I...

Why do all SWMBOs hate brewing and what to do about it?

Glad for folks that had a SO that was cool with you brewing. I however became single 2 years before starting this hobby up, so I don't have many of the issues that others have mentioned. My kids tho, don't care for a lager mash day "it smells weird dad!" they say. Other brews less so, but the...

How many of you guys aerate with an oxygen tank?

I run a similar regulator, but with the diffusion stone on a wand. I get the Bernzomatic oxygen tanks from the local Ace hardware, about $13/ea. Usually run one for 1-2mins for each batch, one tank has lasted at least 7 batches. It's prolly overkill, but I like the peace of mind.

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

These questions regarding calibrating boil-off expectations got me wondering.... What target pre-boil volume are you folks aiming for? and... What post-boil volume is going into the fermenter? 6.5gal/24.6L? I cannot answer the question asked specifically as I run a 6.5, and generally run...

    Mash Tun

Having a food safe bucket to drain the mash tun into, then dumping that into your kettle will obviate the need for a pump. Swap a Foundry kettle for your propane+pot and what you describe is pretty much what I have always done. This 2-vessel setup also lets you use your kettle to heat up...

    Mash Tun

You do need to lift wet grain out of the cooler, so takes a little effort, but beyond that cleanup is ridiculously easy.

    Mash Tun

I can't beat 49 cents, good timing on finding that 95% OFF! I've made a few MIAB batches with some paint strainer bags from Ace Hardware, 2 pack was maybe $4.00. I also have a Brew Bag, which is indeed more expensive, but you can get by with a paint bag. Honestly, I'd get the screen and...

    Mash Tun

I was wondering this as well: how are you heating your mash water? do you have an electric kettle (foundry/mash-n-boil/grainfather/other/etc)? Will it be able to heat a full charge of strike water? If the answer is yes, get the cooler. The 10gal round cooler will work pretty well with a...

What are your tips for keeping costs down

I have 2 IC’s, the SS coil from my foundry and a copper coil. The copper goes in the kettle. I use a 5 gal igloo cooler for MAIB, no false bottom, basically just swap the stock spigot for a SS ball lock. Drop the SS into the cooler with large homemade ice cubes similar to yours and water...

Ferment and serve in corny - sediment options?

The silicone line included with floaty kits are sized for use in a standard 5gal ball lock corny methinks, but it also works okay in a 6.1gal torpedo too. The trub layer at the bottom raises the floor somewhat even in the larger keg, which may be why the line length is good for my needs. I’ve...

Ferment and serve in corny - sediment options?

In practice, this is a far smaller concern than one may believe. Having a spunding valve to allow pressure differentials as low as 1-2 PSI between ferm keg and serving is key, also going SLOW. At this pressure I can watch the beer flow thru the lines and stop the transfer once we hit bottom...

Ferment and serve in corny - sediment options?

I have been keg fermenting from day 1, now almost 2 years and a few dozen batches. I went floating dip tube right away and swapped in a mesh filter for the open end. I still close transfer from ferm keg to serving. This works with flat as well as carbonated beer as long as you utilize a...

    Yeast Nutrients Recommendations Please?

I use Wyeast nutrient, generally 5mg/1 tsp per 5 gal/19L batch Add 10 mins before turning off the burner in to the kettle.
