    Spent Grain

I too have been struggling what to do with my spent grains. I got chickens, thinking they would eat them up, but the 5 can not gobbles up 10 gallon batch worth before they self-ferment. All of the ideas I see suggest making bread, pretzels, dog treats, etc. None of these require much more than a...

    Is this "Partial Mash"

I have have always thought the partial mash refers to wort not made entirely from grains. A russian imperial that has a couple pounds of DME to reach its OG would be a partial mash. If steeping grains is partial mash, then how would one define extract brewing? Only extracts? My local brew club...

    Grain Crush

It looks like the kernels near your palm are nearly intact! I would use a different mill or move the rollers closer. I am not sure if multiple runs on it will make much of a difference with that result. My kernels come out pretty pulverized and the husks are torn in half. I get better efficiency...

    A beginner...again.

There are about 1000 varieties of hops, so IPAs are now about creating complicated hop schedules. You probably know that from drinking beer. There are pressurized fermenters now. Place a pressure relief valve on a gutted sanke keg. It helps to mimic the static pressure of commercial conicals...

PLEASE let the Northern Brewer buy-out be a hoax!

Wait... SAB Miller owns that brewery in Montana?!?!? I thought Whitefish, MT was so quaint. Those bastards get their hands on everything

is my plastic carboy still safe?

I would ditch that procedure. Poring boiling water into any fermenter other than stainless steel is foolish. You would see the bottom of your glass carboy pop right off.

Is is possible to melt a hole in a kettle?

I used a 23 tip burner for a while, but it had way too much power and used too much fuel. I now use the banjo burners that edlemetall and bilchman use on their products. As for melting a pot... I highly doubt it. If you only turn it on when their is liquid in your kettles you should be fine. The...

Small amount of iso in my carboy

"In untreated animals, the median lethal dose lies between 4 and 8 g/kg. Many sources mistakenly estimate the lethal dose to be 250 mL in humans (eg, less than 400 mL of a 70 percent solution). It is important to recognize that, with supportive treatment alone, adults and children have survived...

    Hillbilly biologist

You can mix two strains of yeast in a flask, but they will not hybridize into a new strain. You will have two strains fermenting along side each other. Usually people make a "house strain" by choosing a yeast they like and fermenting with it, washing the left over yeast, then repeat, repeat...

    What makes a home brewer

I think home brewers should grow their own barley. Wait, did I say home brewers? I meant farmers.

I need a sanity check....Long Story About the Wife

My 2 cents. People are going to be be who they want to be. I am not sure if talking about the problem of her sneaking around will change her character. From my experience the evidence you get to see is the tip of an iceberg. She may be letting it show through so she can have an easy way out of...

Eat it beersmith, eat it all

BTW... I bought the mobile app for my phone. It lacks in calcs department; like pitch rate and brew-house efficiency. Lame

    Left over hop ipa

This seems like a typical IPA hop schedule for me. I am not sure what the saaz is going to do, but I think it will be mild enough in that amount to just up bittering a bit. Citra/Columbus/centennial are all pretty good together. I would use Magnum for boil hops.

    Wort Chilling

I was entertaining myself with sketches for wort chiller ideas and had this in mind...... That is pretty much what I do now, except only ice water (no glycol). I use my HERMs in the HLT as the heat exchanger, and just fill the HLT with chunks of ice made in my Keezer/fermenting chamber. 5...

    Wort Chilling

I tried this exact method myself a while back. The problem is that your freezer will chill the ice and cooler much lower than 32F. When you go to run water through the chiller, even hot water, it will do what it does best and chill the water down below 32F. This creates an ice plug which will...

    Maris otter

So I got a sack of Maris Otter in a group buy and went to make a SMaSH with it. The grain seemed darker than my normal 2-row base when crushed. I have a pic of the wort drawn off the tun and the grain. *note: these are taster size mugs. The gravity was also crazy low too, weird. I am wondering...
