    Pump use questions

My method was to mount it to an old desk drawer. It's not waterproof, but it helps keep small splashes/spills from above off of the motor.

    Need thermomenter recommendations

My old thermometer (a cheapo analog cooking thermometer) is really in need of replacement as it reads off and can't be calibrated. I'd like to get a digital that can be calibrated and has a fast readout. Basically, I'm looking for recommendations for a good thermometer that isn't a cheap piece...

It is ok to drink beer in the morning on Homebrew day..... isnt it?

Last Saturday I had two full Maß worth of pale ale while I was brewing. I had an annoying leak in my HLT, so I needed it.

    Plato vs. specific gravity

I was just wondering why exactly we use specific gravity as opposed to Plato like most (all?) commercial brewers do. I personally have no idea what a Plato measurement means when I see it and have to convert since I've always used SG, but why do we use different units than pro brewers?

    Buy or Rent

We bought a place last year that we had been already living in for a couple years and paying rent on, but turns out the first time homebuyer credit didn't apply to us. The former owner is my mother-in-law, so the credit doesn't apply. The county assessment on the property has gone down since...

How are you supposed to clean a keg when it runs out?

My method is similar to one posted above, with more steps: I first rinse the keg out with hot water to get any yeasty sludge off the bottom, and then put about two gallons of hot water in it. I then put a little pressure on it and force the water through the beer line. Once that's done, I put...

Don't be no fool -- PRINT AND KEEP YOUR RECIPES!

I keep the vast majority of my stuff (including Beersmith) on a Linux server at home running Samba so any of my Windows PCs can access it. I periodically backup the server with tar to an external drive.

That's not a flask. THIS is a flask.

Holy poop that's one big mofo. That's all I've got to add.

    Lost

I watched the first two seasons but dropped it when it fell into a pit of suck in early third. I haven't cared enough to try to suffer through the rest of third to catch up.

    The Poo discussion

I was always told that CO2 was inorganic despite the carbon as it does not contain an H atom.

    The Poo discussion

Water and CO2 are inorganic compounds, try growing anything with neither available or excreted by a living organism. IF YOU USE WATER IT ISN'T "ORGANIC"! See what I did there :fro:

    Substitute for Brown Malt

I've heard that Special Roast is almost the same thing as brown malt, or can be substituted for it. It's I think a darker version of Victory.

    Foodsaver and bulk grain question:

I think I get 5 lbs of grain to a bag if I use the wider rolls (don't know what the exact size is) and measure out to the sixth white mark and cut. You can reuse the bags with a lesser amount of grain since they'll be shorter, but don't expect to be able to get all of the air out on a refill...

    Bad experience with Williams Brewing

I've actually gotten milk at a store that was three days from expiration, with a "price reduced" sticker on it. Interestingly enough it was fine until a week after the date, at which point most of it was already gone.

    Bad experience with Williams Brewing

I honestly wouldn't really care that much. I'm still using dry yeast I've had in my fridge dated 2007 without any issue.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Just finished weighing my hops and crushing my grain. Soon as I eat something I'm getting the rest of the gear out so I can get the mash started. BeerSmith Recipe Printout Recipe: American Amber Style: American Amber Ale TYPE: All Grain Taste: (0.0) Recipe Specifications Batch...

I have had it with my Plate chiller.

You don't want pellet hops to gum up your plate chiller, but they will also clog a boil screen. I have several of these to remedy that problem: They're 4" in diameter so there's plenty of room for the pellets to expand and contact the wort and they contain the hop sludge pretty well. I...

Oh yeah, I forgot about that stuff. Blech. :cross:

    Show us your SWMBO...

A pic from a few years ago, which is one of the few of us together (she takes a lot of photos, but the photographer isn't usually in their own pics): Both of us at Anime Boston 2007, dressed as Nanao and Shunsui from Bleach, with a comparison pic:
