Stuck Sparges only with 10 gal rubbermaid

Good question and I think the short answer is as long as the cement is dry, it should not leech off and it is safe. It would still be worth your while to just use the minimum amount of glue needed to hold things together. Since many a waterline is pvc, I would not worry too much. But if you are...

Stuck Sparges only with 10 gal rubbermaid

I did the same, went from a 5g round to a 10 g round and reused everything initially but I use a false bottom. My first batch, I had the dreaded stuck sparge. So I did some reading on the subject of braids verses false bottoms and the decided to stick with a FB. After I got my larger FB, 12"...

How to breweries get their unique yeast strains?

The local breweries up here, rural Colorado, are small and buy their yeast commercially. They reuse them for around 30 generations and buy more. They are more concerned about producing a consistant beer over risking a batch due to some mutation that could produce a off flavor.

    Blow Off Tube or AirLock

My yeast likes to take it's time. I brewed a Octoberfast last Saturday. I noticed the yeast was getting a little more active today and after seeing this thread, I decided to check on it. My airlock was over run. So here it is 6 days after my brewday and I just reinstalled a blow off tube. I had...

    Barley Crusher Contact Troubles

Just order it from a reseller. That's what I did as Austin Homebrew Supply gave me free shipping with my order. If I ordered it direct, BC was going to charge something like $20 more. Now I doubt you can get free shipping to New Zealand, but I am sure it will be cheaper then through BC directly...

    New Handmade Growler

Very nice indeed. I am a glassblower too, but I work in Borosilicate and these are all made with Soda-lime glass in a glory hole. Needless to say, I will have to order a custom one for myself.

Group buy for Used 5 Gallon Ball Lock Kegs $25

    Remote probe thermometer wort proofing

Add me to the chorus. I was wondering why my digital meters always seemed to go haywire while brewing before I stumbled on this thread. I had a easy time sliding some aquarium tubing on my Onieda meter, but my cheaper walmart probe was a bit of a bitch. The crimp on it's probe made it resist...

Yet Another "Is my beer ruined?" thread

I thought refractometers were only good for reading your wort before fermentation. I believe the alcohol throws the reading off. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Cooler MLT: leaking inside cooler walls

Where are you located? If it is somplace humid, it may be impossible to get all the water out from inbetween the walls and you could end up with mold/mildew. Your fittings are obviously not tight enough and not sealing properly. What are you using for your drain valve? As far as draining it...

    Fastest way to clean bottles

I just fill a large cooler with water and iodine so it is a light brown color. Then about 30 bottles go in and sit for a couple of minutes. 2 minutes is sanitized, 10 minutes is hospital grade clean. Truth be told, by the time I get the last bottle sunk, I can start taking out the first bottles...

Dead mouse in carboy, would you use it?

Fixed it for you! :tank: Just clean it. 20 yrs ago, larger carboys were not easy to find. So I got a 6 gal used acid glass and just rinsed it many times. I still have and use it, and it makes great beer. I currently have my Scottish ale fermenting away in there.

I am so mad! Always calibrate Hydro

If they are already bottled just drink them! That and you can't really blame a hydrometer for a week or thin beer. We have all been there, done that (thin beers) and one needs to know your reciepe and mash details to give you advice. I am sure that is where you can improve your beer. In my...

How often do you clean your bottles?

Way to much work to hand clean each bottle each time in my book. If they were clean enough to keep my beer safe, they should be clean with me flushing them out immediatly after each use. Then they get sanitized right before I use them again and put on the drying rack, then bottled. In 18 years...

    Is this yeast worth washing

I would pass. Do you really want a mix of old 1056 and champagne yeast? I mean how could you really predict how the yeast would effect future batches with the two mixed? It may not be a big deal but why take the chance that the combination would be a little weird. Plus you know the yeast was...

An Improved Method for Monitoring Mash Temperature

I like the idea of an accurate temperature sensor as I know all my thermometers are off. And since I am at altitude, 8000ft, I can't go off my boiling point to calibrate them. So if nothing else I will be able to calibrate my thermometers with the LM335. I looked around a little for a...

I f'ing love my barley crusher

Brown delivers! Mine showed up today! It was just 5 days late including the weekend, so that was not too bad. I will give it a whirl this weekend when I brew my next batch.

Breweries or Beers in Breckenridge Colorado

You do not need a car in Summit county, you can always take the Summit Stage (bus). It will take twice as long to get anywhere, but it is free. With the stage to be your designated driver, take it to Frisco for the Backcountry Brewery. Then on to Dillon for the Dam Brewery and Pug Ryans. Just...
