    Yeast Starter Botched?

My first starter took a few days to get active. So I just kept my carboy capped off untill I was ready to pitch. I figured since I had starsaned my carboy and the cap, and the wort was clean from the boil, it could sit a few days until I had enough yeast for the job. I just bottled that batch...

    Bottle Sanitation Issues

I used to soak my bottles in a iodine mix for 2 minutes and then bottle washed and hung to dry. That worked well but was water intensive and took a long time. So I recently switched to starsan. Now I use a vinerator with 1/8 tsp of starsan and two cups of water to sterilize my bottles. Takes...

Blow off after on day 3

My Oktoberfast I brewed with WLP001 and it pretty much did the same thing. This was the first time for me having harvested the yeast from my IPA so it took a little time to get going. The fermentation started after about 24 hours and on day three, the krausen had invaded the airlock. Yeast will...

    WY1272 Oktoberfest?

I used WPL001 California yeast for my Oktoberfest (Oktoberfast) because I do not have a fermentation chamber yet. Since my laundry room/fermentation room stays in the low 60's in the winter, I figured the clean fermentation of the California Ale yeast would do just that, be clean in flavor more...

    My Brew Sculpture

How does the legs for the shelf work? Do you have a pic from the side of them showing the hinge? It just does not seem like they could be hinged the way they look in the picture when the shelf is stowed.

Do barometric pressure changes affect boil temperatrue?

I do not see how it would matter. Sure the boiling temp would fluctuate a little but who cares? We are not brewing beer at boiling temps anyway. Since I live at 8000 ft, my boiling temp is 197, but I still mash my ales between 152 and 158. I mash out and sparge at 180 so the boiling temp plays...

best false bottom for 10gal cooler?

I am using AHS false bottom and I have the gap on my BC set at .028"! I have only done 3 batches with it yet and so far, no problem with spargeing. I just mix up my grain bed when I mash out for 10 minutes with 180f water, and then I start sparging and never touch the bed again. How are you...

    Scottish Ale gone SOUR

I brewed a scottish ale recently with the same yeast strain. I had read to give it plenty of time at cooler temps to get a clean fermentation. So I let it sit in my primary for 22 days and then transferred to my secondary at a SG of 1.015. Ten days later I bottled it at a FG of 1.005, it tasted...

Can a hoebrewer make REALLY high IBU beer?

New Years Day I brewed a IPA with Warrior as my bittering hops and Centennial in the last stages of the boil for aroma, then more Centennial for dry hopping. I am drinking it now and I think it came out too smooth, not enough bitterness. Well my wife is not into IPA’s and she thinks it is too...

    What are you drinking now?

I have a 12 pack of fliptops left of my Saint Paul Porter and I am also enjoying my Bee Cave IPA. Next up in the pipeline is my Octoberfast and then my Wee-heavy. I just brewed a version of the Black Pearl Porter today to get in line.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I brewed a porter based on Biermuncher's Black Pearl Porter. I messed up a little on it tho. I forgot the 4oz of Coffee Malt I was planning on using and I boiled off too much so I ended up with 5.75 gals at 10.5% instead of 7 gals. So I just decided this is dumb and I went and boiled another gal...

    Few Grains in wort??

Don't sweat it. They will drop out and a few will not matter much. I could see more of a problem with a pilsner but any decent ale should be strong enough to not matter. My last IPA had a few grains in the runoff as my false bottom was too small and was letting stuff get around the edge. The...

To Secondary or Not to Secondary?

I still use secondaries as I prefer to clean the carboy of the krausen ring about 2 weeks into the fermentation cycle. I never have had a oxidation problem as it is easy to syphon the wort off the trub. My octoberfast had settled down but it was at 1.020. I know a couple more weeks will drop...

    does yeast like music

When I tried to keep the yeast happy I tried some tunes. I went with the local top 40 station first because I figured if the station was powerful the yeast would dig it. Well after they all tried to march off a cliff after hearing beounce or lady gag to much I switched it to the classic rock...

    Barley Crusher Contact Troubles

I used mine for the second time tonight. I milled 16lbs of grain for brewing a porter tomorrow in about 5 minutes, including time to weigh the grain out. Its supposed to snow all day tomorrow so I will be brewing in my garage. So much better then the old Corona mill I was useing before. It was...

    Hot tap water to start?

As above and hot water can leach stuff out of old pipes. So you are safer using cold water for all your cooking needs. I live in a house that is 54 yrs old so I take no chances with useing hot water for anything other then washing and showering.

    When to retire old equipment?

Both my bottling bucket and two of my glass carboys are 19 yrs old. I just replaced the racking valve on the bucket since it started to leak. I also have a few hoses that are around the same age. None of my gear gets any UV light so I expect the plastic to last. My old tubing is stained from...

    Carboys vs. Better Bottles

I prefer glass since it is easy to clean without worrying about scratches. My glass is 19yrs old and I have never broken one even with moving several times and a couple of good thunks in the sink with them. That said I just bought a 8 gallon bucket to expand my capacity and to have a backup...

    Grain Milling Question

Nope, a lot of people do a second runnings to get better efficiency out of their mashes. As long as you do not get stuck sparges, tighten your rollars and run it through twice for good measure. I need to do both with my BC right now. I just need to dig out my old feeler gauges before I mess with...
