    Chest freezer heater

I am planning on using a light bulb too in my fridge. The fixture is a cheap clip on fixture that you can find at any hardware store, cost about $3.

To put hops in a bag or not, that is the question

I have been using just one, reusable bag for many, many years. I have a long enough string on it that I tie it to the pot handle. This allows me to pull it out of the wort and add more hops multiple times during the boil. After I am done, I boil the bag in water to remove some of the stain and...

Oktoberfest Beer with Nottingham Ale Yeast?

Based on the discription of the yeast, I would give it a try and ferment it cool if you can. They claim it will produce a lager type of beer when fermented at the low range of its suggested temp range of 57 to 70f. The caution that you should pitch a larger quanity of the yeast if you do plan on...

Mash differences between Beersmith 2 & Brewtarget

Why not just take the grains you need out of the freezer the night before so they can warm up to room temp? I usually mill them the night before anyway so its all ready for my brew day.

Missed Ingredient in my Wee Heavy

Don't mess with it. Just drink it and make note how it comes out. Next time, add it and see if it makes a difference. The last time I made my Coffee Porter, I forgot to add the coffee malt. No reason to risk infection, so I am drinking it, but it is missing the extra roasted flovor the malt...

Amount of coffee for an RIS

So Yankee, you just threw the beans in intact, that would explain why you did not get stronger coffee flavor. I believe that cold steeping ground beans gives off a lot more flavor, hence I caution everyone to start with less and work your way up to more. It also depends on what type of coffee...

Amount of coffee for an RIS

You could do that, but I feel that it is easier to filter a pint of cold steeped coffee over filtering 5+ gallons of beer. But go ahead and try it and report back on your results.

Amount of coffee for an RIS

I have found that 4oz of cold steeped coffee will give you a pronounced coffee flavor that most find overpowering. I have been brewing a malty, robust coffee porter that is strong on all counts, 8%. I use 2oz of cold steeped coffee at bottling and the coffee flavor is more balanced and not...

    Brew hoses

I just rinse them with hot water and hang to dry. But mold and rust are not issues here since we are so dry. Hell I can leave a bag of chips open for a few days and they will still be crisp.

    Lucky?

Your yeast will probally be a little stressed at all the work you are asking them to do. They may go on strike, or just pee strange flavors into your beer, especially if it is at 85+ degrees.

    Storing yeast: boil or Starsan

The other reason for boiling your water when you go to make a yeast bank is to remove all stray oxygen from the water. You want the yeast to go dormant and the lack of O2 makes them do just that. No food and no O2, time for the yeasties to take a nap!

    Oktoberfest Ale - WLP810 VS. WLP080

Sounds like a good substitute to use in making an Oktoberfast. Just make sure you stay in the temp range of 65 to 70F. Higher temps will not give you the same result.

Brainfart, should I stir before first runnings?

Stir while adding water for mashout and then let sit for 10+ minutes to let the grain bed settle. Then start first runnings.

Midwest Supplies Grain Mill- Read before ordering!

Or get your own grain mill! Most LHBS will set their grain mill pretty loose as the do not want customers to come back complaining of stuck sparges. Plus they will need more grain to hit their numbers. I set my mill to 0.028" and have no problem, but it is my mill, not some stores.

    WTB - Ranco Controller

Nice, thanks for the tip! I have been looking for one myself but since money is tight, I have been looking for a better deal. So I just ordered one off e-bay myself!

I guess I was wrong! Or insane :D or most likely both...........:drunk: I will have to try less next time.......

    Mash out

I think you misunderstood what was going on there..... One mashes at a temp around 152. Then to mash out, I add about a gallon of boiling water to bring the mash up to (hopefully) 170. You don't want to go much higher, as higher temps can wash out off flavor tannins. Then I sparge with 170...

    Thinking about quitting brewing.

Or just take a break for a while. I never thought about it but when my kids were born, I took a 5 year break. Then one day, I got the urge to brew again and I came back to the hobby. The beer I brew now is so much better then the beer I brewed back then, so the break did me some good!
