    Help! Multiple Hop Additions

Yeah, I'm 5 min from Adding the next addition and mistyped muslin or my phone auto corrected. I was in a rush to post. But thanks! :-)

    Help! Multiple Hop Additions

It doesn't indicate that the bag with the bittering hops should be removed.

    Help! Multiple Hop Additions

I'm following instructions that say to add the bittering hops in a muslim bag to the boil, after 30 min, add flavoring hops. But do I remove the bag with the bittering hops or leave it in for the entire boil?

    Porter Question

It was a kit put together by a local home brew shop. I have the recipe, but not with me. I followed all instructions and I bottled yesterday. It's actually pretty dark brown so I think I'm good. Just had the wrong impression in my mind of the color. Flavor and scents are good.

    Porter Question

Aha! Got it. Thanks for the link. I didn't care much about the color, since it tastes good, but was confused since it wasn't what I expected.

    Porter Question

K, so I brewed a mini mash coffee porter. Been in the primary for almost 3 weeks. It's reached FG but my sample is a dark brown, not much darker than the IPA I brewed. My question is, shouldn't it be more black like a stout? I drank a porter last night at the bar and it was black. You could...

OK to Rack to a Secondary?

Thanks for the feedback. Think I'll leave it and brew the next batch in the carboy. Thanks all!

OK to Rack to a Secondary?

I would like to free up my bucket and rack the coffee porter I have to a secondary. It's been in the primary now for 10 days. Is it ok to rack now and leave it in the secondary (glass carboy) for another 2 weeks or so?

    Good Hard Cider Recipe?

Anyone ever make hard cider and have a tasty recipe to share? I have a friends Bday coming up and that's her beverage of choice.

    Porter Fermentation

I have a coffee porter that's been in the primary for 8 days. Is 2 weeks long enough before bottling or should I let it go longer? 3 weeks?

    no alcohol content

Wait, so you only left a stout ferment for 10 days? There's your problem. Not long enough. Just because your airlock stopped bubbling doesn't mean ferm is complete. You'll wanna leave a stout sit way longer than 10 days before you bottle. Not sure how you came up with those gravity readings...

    First Partial Mash

Not sure how much grain you have in one bag, but you may wanna try splitting it up into several grain bags. I just made my first partial grain batch, used a 5 gallon stock pot with a gallon and a half of water also. I bought a kit put together by the home brew store I go to and their directions...

    Newb

I gotta say, this really isn't a very difficult hobby. I'm drinking my very first homebrew, an IPA, and I'm loving it. No way I thought my first batch would taste this good. All extract brew, but my expectations were low and I had hoped for something at least drinkable. Good luck! I think you'll...

    Grommets and the Noobs

Funny cause in the class, they told us to throw away any instructions that came with the kit. I still read them, and there was nothing about the grommet falling through. I think it's just natural to put on the lid first and then top it off with the airlock. I've learned if you twist the airlock...

    Grommets and the Noobs

Ok, I'm reading all over this site about noobs pushing the grommet on their bucket lid into the brew. I did the exact same thing first time. Not sure why this is so easy to do, but why don't they give you some sort of warning? I thought I was the only idiot to do this and felt like a fool until...

    Sealing a fermentation bin lid.

I don't think you wanna glue your lid on. That should never be necessary. Even if CO2 is escaping from the lid, fermentation will still occur you just won't have the visible gauge of the airlock to go by. I would agree you may want to buy a new airlock and see if that helps. And are you...

    Local store in philly?

Not sure what part of Philly you're in and how far you're willing to travel, but I go to Keystone Home Brew in Montgomeryville, PA just about a mile from the Montgomery Mall off of route 309. It's worth the trip. The place is huge and has everything you need. The staff is extremely knowledgeable...

    Testing Gravity

I take a sample before bottling and agree that it's better to drink it than toss it back in anyway. I like to know what the beer is tasting like. And like the others, it's not worth the risk of infection and it's more fun to taste the fruits of your labor. Don't worry so much, just get brewing...
