Why Phosphoric Acid is Flavor Neutral

I'm new to water chemistry. What's the definition of "high" for alkalinity? My water report from Ward Labs has my total alkalinity at 100 and HCO3 at 122.

Bottle carbonating a lager at 66 degrees F. with W-34/70 yeast

Three days isn't long enough. Give it at least a week. I just did a Helles with 34/70 and I waited three weeks, just to be sure.

Another request for help with water test results

I have to admit that water chemistry is getting to be way over my head, so any help would be appreciated. I'm on a well and have a whole-house water softening system (Rainsoft). My treated water tastes good, no salty taste to it. The beers I've done so far taste good (at least to me). My...

    Bottle Conditioning

I use a 12 ounce plastic Coke bottle to gauge carbonation. It's the first one I fill when bottling. The bottle will get harder as carbonation occurs. If you need to, keep a second plastic bottle filled with water so you remember what the uncarbonated beer felt like. Takes my batches 2 weeks...

    Temperature after Bottling

I fill one 12 ounce plastic Coke bottle in each batch to gauge my carbonation. If the bottle starts to get hard, I know carbonation is happening. After about 2-3 weeks, it should be hard like a soda. I also keep another bottle filled with water for comparison.

    Bottle recommendation?

Bell's bottles. Labels come off with hot water.

    Bottle Conditioning...Can you see it?

For what it's worth, I use a clear 12 ounce diet Coke bottle to gauge carbonation. When the bottle gets hard, your beer is carbonated. And since it's clear, you can also see the sediment build up in the bottom.

Putting 13/16" Holes in My Kettles - What's the Best Option?

I agree with Bobby. I used a 21mm carbide hole saw on my Tall Boy kettle and it worked lke a charm. Perfect hole in less than 30 seconds. Pilot hole with a cobalt drill bit took forever, though.

Lager bottling - does this sound right?

Getting ready to do my first lager and I'm a little concerned about yeast viability after lagering for weeks on end. I've read the threads here that pretty much tell me not to worry and that there'll be plenty of yeast to carb, though it may take a bit longer. I was thinking that if I were...

    Bottle Conditioning a Lager

I use a plastic 12 ounce soda bottle to gauge carbonation. Once the bottle gets hard, I know the batch is carbonated.

    Drilling a Concord Kettle

I'll second this. Just drilled my Tall Boy kettle with one of these and it went through it like was nothing. The pilot hole, on the other hand, took a while with a 1/8" cobalt drill.

Brew Bucket by SS Brewing Technologies

Well, add me to the list of happy users. I just bottled Biermuncher's Nierra Sevada clone and I'm kicking myself for not getting it sooner. The trub stayed in the in the conical bottom and the dip tube, when horizontal, worked perfectly let me get 5 gallons of clear beer into my bottling...

    DIY Stir Plate Build

Nice article. Rather than hassling with the switch and potentiometer, why not buy one from Amazon? Here's what I used and it works great. Gives me much more control over fan speed than just a potentiometer . https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N0UGVPU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Beersmith - Add-ons not working properly

Add-ons have never worked since I installed Beersmith (Version 2.2.12). I can connect to the Cloud and Cloud Search works. The "Check for Updates" function apparently works, too. Tried both disabling the popup blocker in Firefox and my Windows firewall. Neither worked. Thanks for the...
