Breiss Carapils Dextrin Malt - every batch?

Is there any reason NOT to use some in every recipe? I am just learning about what these different malts do and when I read that this one adds body, foam retention and beer stability without changing the color or flavor I don't understand why I see so many recipes that don't include it. Am I...

    SS Mesh Screen enough filtering?

I am building my first mash tun and I was told by someone that I would also need to stuff additional filtering material inside the ss mesh to filter out the grist. My understanding is that the vorlauf would take care of the first bits of grist and then it would run clear. In case it helps, I...

Well done! I am looking at starting my first all grain and this is helping fill in the gaps in my knowledge. Looking forward to the next video.

Came up half gallon short in Primary

I wasn't paying attention I guess and I came up .5 gallons short in my primary. I brewed a couple days ago and thought I was seeing the wort line below the 5 gallon mark on the bucket, I shined a flashlight up against the side and see it is definitely half a gal short. I did a full boil starting...

    Turkey fryer burner

Will I notice a big difference if I upgrade to one of those fancy propane burners from my cheap turkey fryer burner? I am using a keggle for my boil kettle and it seems like it takes forever to get it up to a boil.

hydrometer reading with hop trub in the wort

After chilling the wort and transferring it from the brew kettle to the fermentation bucket I pulled a sample or wort for a gravity reading. There was a fair amount of floating debris in my test sample. How much will that change my hydrometer reading? The Extra Pale Ale extract kit I was...

how to clone with an extract?

I bought a 6pack of Ranger IPA - New Belgium. I really really like this beer. I would like to find an extract kit that would most closely resemble this beer or find a way to tweek a kit to make it close. For those of you not familiar with that beer, it is 6.5 % alcohol, hopped with Simcoe...

    First brew fermation questions

I have only done 4 extract batches myself, but I have always left the trub behind. Keep the siphon above the sediment at the bottom so it doesn't suck it up. As it gets to the bottom I then gently rock the bucket to about a 45 degree angle and get as much as I can before I start seeing the...

    mouse in my sanitizer bucket

Ok this one is a little strange. I brewed a batch of beer 2 weeks ago and forgot my bucket of sanitizer solution (Starsan) and my racking cane, beer thief and a few other odds and ends soaking in the bucket. Well today I was ready to rack my primary to my secondary carboy. I realized I left my...

Wort chiller. To buy or not to buy...

I just started brewing and have done two extract kit brews now. I also bought the stainless version from Midwest. I like it but can't compare to a copper one as far as performance. I can tell you it does a great job at cooling down the wort, the water coming out the chiller is too hot to touch...

forgot to crush my specialty grains

It is still pretty good beer. It does actually have very good color. I kegged the 5 gallon batch and now am in the drinking phase and it is good. I will definetley try this one again and make sure I crush the grains, I might even add an extra .5oz of hops to the boil to kick it up a notch.

forgot to crush my specialty grains

I ordered an Autumn Amber Ale extract kit from Midwest and chose not to have the specialty grains crushed because I didn't think I would get to brewing it right away. Well I just realized now after brewing it and now drinking it from my keg that I forgot to crush my specialty grains before...

Pickled eggs - reuse the brine for next batch?

New to making these, actually just made my first batch today. I was wondering if anyone knows if you can just keep reusing the vinegar/peppers/onions brine the eggs are in for the next batch of eggs? I used 1 gallon jars that pickles came in and one of them has the hot and spicy eggs with all...

Some pics of my 3rd brew

I like the Arrogant Bastard glass. I was just in San Diego and had a chance to try all the Stone beers. Well most of them. Actually got a sampler pack as a gift while we were there and thought the Smoked Porter was interesting.

    Visiting San Diego

Can anyone throw out some great family (son 8ys; daughter 13yrs) sites and activites. Also maybe some possible breweries that would be worth visiting. We will be there for all of next week visting family in Carlsbad, looking for some beer and non-beer related stuff to do.

Single stage or Two stage fermentation?

I am planning on brewing up a Liberty Cream Ale kit from Midwest this weekend. I going to be kegging this brew and want to know if it is recommended to also do the secondary fermenter or go from the primary to the keg? Pros and Cons to either way?

Keg fridge - Any certain brand/model

I am looking at using a smaller style dorm fridge like a Sanyo 4912. I saw a good video by Christ Knight on youtube. Can you just ANY fridge for your corny kegs or are there certain brands/models that are highly recommended for use as a kegerator. I plan on eventually drilling a hole in it for...

    Newbie in Fargo,ND

Nice to hear from some locals right away. My Master brewers kit is going to be delivered on Monday and home to do my first boil next week sometime. My problem is I plan to keg my brew and need to start looking for a fridge fast. Any recommendations on a small fridge would be great.
