    Brewshed Build

Just saw this thread today for the first time. Looks Amazing! That's more like a manpalace than a mancave. Good luck with it. Looking forward to seeing the installed brew system.

    Smartphone brewing

+1 for Ibrewmaster. I agree that it takes some time to learn how the whole thing works but it is a very helpful app. And the comparison to the style guide has been extremely helpful in keeping my personal recipes in check. Considering all the money I spend on brewing a $10 app is not that big of...

    Help me like IPAs...

Seems like you may be more interested in an English style IPA rather than an American version. IF you really want to give it a try then Fuller makes one and I think the Yards IPA is pretty good. I agree with many other posters that there's no reason to force yourself to like a particular...

Using honey or brown sugar as a priming sugar

Jarrodaden, there are plenty of sources to say that Priming sugar (corn sugar I'm guessing) is NOT the only way. I've been using regular white cane sugar for the last few batches and it's worked great. You can use honey, brown sugar, molasses, Maple syrup, DME, candy sugar, and probably more...

Using honey or brown sugar as a priming sugar

According to John Palmer, you can use either for priming. Honey is 95% fermentable & Brown sugar is 97% fermentable. Meaning you may be able to taste the percentage that is unfermentable. For a 5 gallon batch he recommends 4.7 oz of honey or 4 oz of brown sugar. I haven't used either, but the...

    First Brew Night

I know it's tough to be patient with the first brew, but it sounds pretty normal to me. You'll see a pretty aggressive fermentation in the first couple of days and then things die down for a bit. If you are going to transfer the beer to s secondary, then you can do that after about 5-7 days in...

    Thinking about home brewing.

Check out the vendor showcase on this forum for the cool brewing fermentation cooler. I never tried it, but at $50, it might be worth trying before going out to buy a freezer and temp controls. btw, you should definitely give homebrewing a try. It will be an obsession before you know it. And...

    First Brew Night

Congrats on your first (of many) brew nights! The second wave of addiction will come when your friends like the beer that you're making. Then it's on!

    Taking Notes?

I guess it depends on what you want to get out of your note taking. If you're trying out your own recipe, you may want to keep good notes on recipe, procedures, timing & stats so that you can replicate that brew. If you're following a clone recipe that someone else has written out directions for...

    Sanitizer Drama

So true. After only brewing a handful of times, keeping things cleaned & sanitized is a lot less of a problem than I thought it would be. Once you do it a couple of times you'll get a system that works for you and then you can just worry about the actual beer making. Hope the first brew goes...

    Sanitizing auto siphon

First I soak the siphon and tubing in a 5 gallon bucket for a few minutes to santitize the outside since it will be imerged in the beer. Then I just use the auto siphon to transfer the starsan from one bucket to another. It's simple and has not yet caused any problems.

first batch bottled with a few concerns...

Did you prime with sugar or DME? If you used DME the the film at the top of the bottle is just a mini version of the krausen that you'd see in the primary. If your priming ratios are correct, and you've left some headspace in the bottles, then bombs shouldn't be too much of a worry. Although...

First Saison for Home Brew Day

Sounds like yours is coming out great. I was also surprised how high my ABV was - I ended somewhere around 6.5%. That yeast blend sounds like a cool experiment. I'm already planning on brewing another saison batch when I'm done with this one and I'll be playing around with the yeast - maybe I'll...

    First batch help

No issues flpsktr. The worst outcome of an imperfect brew is still beer. If it happens to be undrinkable beer (which doesn't seem to be the case here) then the worst that can happen is that you have to brew again. I can't see the negative! Drink up, have fun. Be a mad scientist if you want to be...

    First batch help

It's his beer, he can try whatever he wants. I've trolled here for a while and Revvy has written some very educational and helpful comments to people. I just thought this was came on too thick. But since I'm not the OP, I'll step aside and let the thread go on. Sorry to the rest for taking it...

Does anyone have a good Saison Recipe

+1 Only brewed 1 saison so far and I kept to this KISS philosophy. I'll probably be keeping it just as simple for my 2nd attempt until I get the exact base that I want. Then split batches for flavor differences just for the fun of it.

First Saison for Home Brew Day

BTW, tasted my first bottle after about 2 weeks conditioning and I'm loving it. It's definitely a little green, but it's got a great Belgian flavor. I will be brewing this again ... and adding more sugar as people in this thread have suggested. Genjin, any feedback on how yours is going?
