    Keggle or 20 gallon Blichmann

I have to 2nd that. Indeed they are. And I got my from AHS as well. One bit o' advice when you get it: use that heat shield to protect the thermometer and valve joint. Even WITH it, I still melted off the plastic coating to the valve handle on the first go-around. Now, I'm using my wife's...

    How important is water

I second that Though, it never hurts to experiment a bit either, right? That's very much the fun in this hobby. Maybe you'll turn a beer you like into one you absolutely love. I'm brewing today, and am going to add salts for the first time...to bring the pH down a bit. I'll do a...

Installing retaining ring on Sanke Keg

Was able to figure it out. The issue I was having was getting it popped OUT (oddly enough since that SHOULD be the easier thing). Just needed a stronger screwdriver to get the ring started--thought the sanke tool was supposed to help on that front, but it doesn't. It's only good for working...

    Electric HLT questions

Cooler usage is what I'm looking to do, too. Did you rig it up in some way so that it doesn't touch (and melt) the sides?

    Electric HLT questions

I'm in the midst of building a heat stick, and it looks like I'm 'limited' to a 1500W element (seems as though 15 amps is the max for straight blade plugs?). Which brand of element did you buy? And are you happy with it?

    Easy enough!

But I needn't leave it connected, right? Pressurize then remove the connection?

    Exploring "no chill" brewing

Here's a thought: I've got an extra corny. Suppose I could use it as my no chill vessel instead of buying a plastic one. Could also get all the air out by covering with a layer of CO2 that way.

Installing retaining ring on Sanke Keg

Any insight on usage of the sanke tool / knife? I was successful using the OP method on getting the spiral out & in with my first sanke keg. However, the next two kegs I got thus far have been impossible to pop the ring out. Sooooo, I bought the tool. Can't figure out what I'm to do with it...

    Exploring "no chill" brewing

Sorry, missed that post as I was posting before seeing that in the thread! Good to know and makes me much more tranquil in giving this a whirl!

    Exploring "no chill" brewing

    LOL. Invent the no-chill-but-chill-slightly-before-no-chilling method!

    Exploring "no chill" brewing

So then does the trade-off of getting a bit of extra sanitization from the hot wort outweigh the potential risk (carcinogen or otherwise) from putting near-boiling liquid into plastic? I think for me, I'll try a higher concentration of iodophor that will get it close to sterile, and let the...

    Exploring "no chill" brewing

Good point. And I guess a 20-minute whirlpool at knockout will also bring the temp down a bit...

    Exploring "no chill" brewing

After read through much of this thread, I'm really curious to try no-chill. However, I do have a concern re: placing near-boiling liquid into plastic, HDPE or otherwise. Out of curiosity, I did call US Plastic to ask them about temp threshold, and they said "180 degrees." I'd have felt...

When do I start dumping out of my conical fermenter

I'm in the same boat as wreals--just got my 14.5 conical and my first batch in it is now 5 days in--and was just trying to determine the same thing. On a related item, NOTE WHAT NOT TO DO: I had the racking arm pointing downward when I transferred to the fermenter, so now when I am taking my...

Yeast Wash--which 'connection to cut'? (see pix)

I need some help here. Need to know what to keep and what to throw away. Background: Attempting my first yeast wash (technically 2 yeast washes as I have two different strains), and here's where I'm at til now. -I left a bit of beer on the yeast cake from each primary fermenter (both...

First time mashing: can I keg a 4 gallon batch?

Greetings. Today I did my first all-grain brew (welcome to the 'club,' me!). While on the whole it went well, I ended up with a total of 8 gallons (was shooting for 10--but with 1st time using a tun, 1st time doing a 10-gal batch & new equipment to boot, comes a learning curve!). I have...

Transfer carbonated brew from 1 keg to another?

Ah, cool. Then, indeed the answer is solved. I'll just tell him he's gotta wait a week or so before serving the first pint! (which reminds me, it's time for a pint! :-)
