    Exploring "no chill" brewing

Actually, I was thinking in terms of if one uses a sanke (or corny) keg to no-chill and ferment, whether or not you could then simply connect the co2, carb it and serve it (figuring that the first few pints would be yeast cake rich). That seems messy/potential for clogging, but would be...

Earliest Time it is "Acceptable" to drink on brew day...

This has been a fun thread-read! It seems we're all pretty much in the same camp: - Drink when you want - Don't overdo it (too often) - Don't drink & drive (especially to get propane) - It's 5pm somewhere - We all need to brew up a Breakfast Stout to have on hand for brew mornings -...

Big breweries using small names to conceal themselves?

I'm with you on this. The way I look at it is that the big boys had their chance to make great beers and they chose not to...until they saw they were getting their arses kicked (albeit in very small market share amounts) by craft brewing. Now they do shady stuff like launching fake brands...

    Exploring "no chill" brewing

One more set of Qs: after it ferments out, do you then carbonate the very same keg? if so, what about the yeast cake?

    Exploring "no chill" brewing

Good job on the video...(I had some trouble viewing the embedded version here, but watched on YouTube and it played just fine). I'll check out your Part 3 (kegging) one soon; curious to see others' processes! Chad

    Exploring "no chill" brewing

So are you going directly from kettle to the sanke? Whirlpooling first? And since you're not hitting it with co2, I'm guessing you aren't putting the 'ring' back in to hold the spike in place - is that right? (lots of questions!) Chad

My Belgian Tripel is still bubbling after 2.5 weeks

At the risk of highjacking--but I don't think I am since I'm curious about how my yeasties are getting along with my first big beer :-)--I want some reassurance I don't have a stuck fermentation: I'm doing an imperial porter--5 gal batch--that had an OG of 1.082. I pitched ~1 cup of Cali Ale...

    Exploring "no chill" brewing

I personally put a layer of CO2 on it--and it's worked fine for me--but don't honestly know if it's required.

    whirlfloc didnt clear my beer?

Ah ha. So that may be my biggest issue--not whirlpooling after it cools. Generally, I've been doing the whirlpool at flame out, but then that always gets disturbed due to the addition of either the immersion chiller or sometimes purified ice--or if I'm doing a stove top brew, by pouring it all...

    whirlfloc didnt clear my beer?

This may be slightly off topic, but... I've been using whirlfloc now for some time, but I'm still a bit unsure how I should 'use' it after adding it to the final 15 mins of the boil. Let me clarify a bit (no pun intended!): I do notice all the 'chunky' proteins settling at the bottom of...

    A tale of 2 kegs--10 gal batch but 2 different outputs (?)

That's a good point. Racking wise, the conical has an arm that is toward the bottom, but not at the bottom. I did first dump what seemed to be the final amount of trub before racking. I think it must be that I only fermented 2 weeks. Probably should have let it sit longer. I've got a...

    A tale of 2 kegs--10 gal batch but 2 different outputs (?)

No, the sanke is fully full (well, 90% or so anyway--it's a 5 gal version). If the sediment has cleared once, then let's say it sits another week or so before I pour more, could a new round of sediment form? If so, maybe that's it...

    A tale of 2 kegs--10 gal batch but 2 different outputs (?)

So I'm not sure what happened with my latest finished batch. It was a California Common (fairly close to Anchor Steam), AG, 10 gal batch. I fermented it in the conical at 64 degrees for 2 weeks (while it was fermented out, this may be the problem--but read to the end first). I kegged...

    Exploring "no chill" brewing

No better birthday present than a beer-related one!

    Exploring "no chill" brewing

I've not done it this way, but I've had success by filling an extra keg (sanke, but am sure corny would work, too) then putting a layer of CO2 on top before setting it aside. Worked perfectly fine!

    Gelatin is no joke!

Hmm, so this raises a question I don't believe has yet been discussed (and I did read the whole thread! :-) The question is this: can one use gelatin with a conical fermenter? Or will it lock up the yeast in the cone and not allow it to be dumped off?

    Gelatin finings

I'm sold. Gonna go turn off the li'l heating 'blanket' I've got on the fermenter so that I can cool it down a wee bit overnight!

    Gelatin finings

That's my question, as well. I've got a conical and live in SoCal, so very unlikely for me to get it under 40F any time soon. At best, I can get it down to maybe 60 overnight in the garage. If that doesn't work, then I guess I'd need to keg first and add when it my kegerator. Hoping to...

    mash efficiency & color

(Hope this isn't a thread highjack, as my comment/question is perhaps another thread) I recently brewed my first Stout (using a trusted recipe), but the color is looking to be more in the realm of a Brown Ale. I had wondered about general efficiency causing the problem, but my efficiency...

    Keggle or 20 gallon Blichmann

Was gonna hold off on asking the following, as I was thinking it was off topic, but then I realized it IS part of the Blichmann, thus could impact the decision on whether or not a person gets one. The question: Are the multiple hose connections for HERMS or something?
