What size batches do you brew?

"5 gallon" batches.... actually 4.5 or 4.75 since I use 5 gallon pails to ferment in. I did just brew 1.75 of Guinness, I don't really want to have 2 cases of it around. I think I'll continue to do smaller batches of new or experimental beers. Thinking about doing some double brew days as my...

What got you into the hobby?

Last fall my dad mentioned it to me a couple times- I like making things in general, and had been getting more and more into craft beer. I had to take some time off work, and spent it reading How to Brew, ordering my first ingredients, and making a terrible pale ale. Now I'm 11 batches in, AG...

How many gallons of homebrew in 2016?

+ 4.75 gallons Collective Arts Rhyme and Reason pale ale clone attempt. = 9020.75

    Official Broken Hydrometer Count

2166. It was at the bottom of a pile of "bottling dishes" in the dish rack. Got broke from the stuff on top.

Do you tilt your mash tun?

I always tilt. I have a 25 lb dumbbell that I put on top to keep the lid seated down on my cooler, and then move it underneath to tilt when I'm draining,

Recipe Critique- Not sure what I'll end up with?

Thought I'd report back. I cracked one tonight after about a week in the bottle. I have to say, it turned out great! Not much in the way of hop aroma, but a sweet and hop-flavour start turns into the malt flavour. Has a really nice gentle bitterness. It's early, but I'm tempted to call it my...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Attempting my first clone, Collective Arts' Rhyme and Reason Extra Pale Ale. They very helpfully listed their malts, bittering, flavour and dry hops on their website along with the ABV and IBU :D

surviving in an alcohol soaked environment - self examination

I DO like the buzz. For me it's after 2. I very rarely have 3 because if I have a third, then I'm having a fourth and a fifth. It's very easy to slip into habits. When I first started working full time after college, and even on my summer coops, I'd have a few every day right after work. My...

    Mystery film inside bottles

I had something similar, and did a bleach as well. My guess was eventually a rinse doesn't quite cut it and after a few batches there's enough of something there for yeast to cling to. There's a thread with a few pictures of mine a few pages back...

More to it than I thought.

Should we start a betting pool on when beer actually gets brewed? Or on the mentioned possible outcomes of this venture? :D

Dry hop timing when cold crashing

Thanks, I think I'll follow this next time I dry hop. Seems like it will work well witch my process. :mug:

How many brews before your first really good one?

I'd say my third batch, which was my first all grain- a simple Cascade Pale Ale. It was delicious and disappeared way too fast. The next three (Hallertau SMASH, Irish Red, and Cream Ale) all had off flavours but the cream ale is improving. My dad liked the the Smash and Cream Ale better than I...

    Budweiser is changing it's name

They just got jealous that we already have a beer called Canadian... :D

    Recipe Database Subsections?

Sorry if this is the wrong spot for this. Where did all the subsections in the recipe database go? Now there's just "Homebrew Ale and "Homebrew Lager" and a few specialty one.

Dry hop timing when cold crashing

Apologies if this has been answered before but I didn't se quite what I was looking for. I often see a time given for dry hopping, ie 3, days, 7 days etc, which I understand is days before packaging? How does this work when you are cold crashing or fining with gelatin? I typically put the...

Safety Concerns using feed grade barley

Bit late since you've already done it, but anyway. My dad farms and works at a grain elevator and I've worked there at various times over the years, so I have a lite bit of experience in the grain production industry. Now, as the majority of barley is produced for beer, it seems to be very...

How can I save money on brew day?

Anyone saving slurry from dry yeast? I mean yes you obviously save money, but right now it seems like a hassle to save less than $3 (I get it in 20g baggies from the LHBS for 4.50, that's good for two batches).

    So tired of crummy efficiency...

Currently what I do is use 5 gallon buckets that have markings on them. They came with up to 3.5 gal marked in quarter gal increments, and I just extrapolated more lines up the side. So in between the 1/4g line I just eyeball. I use that to gather my water, and between the mash tun and kettle...

    So tired of crummy efficiency...

One thing you can do to help with accuracy is measure your gravity and volume pre-boil. It won't be your OG but it will tell you exactly how much sugar you got out of the mash. How are you measuring volume?
