    Who doesnt use a hydrometer?

I've read through the thread and noticed that there are numerous reasons to use one, but few not to. (I understand Walkers concept that it can make a person nervous with off readings.) I kinda align with Walker. ABV doesn't mean a whole lot to me, taste more so. I've been leaving in the...

    Fermentation Complete in 3 days???

Aren't we to wait for 3 consecutive days of the same gravity? That would suggest that 4 days would be the minimum.

Another mill motor question - garage door opener?

Yeah, 3-4 minutes *Shouldn't* hurt it. As to why they haven't been used, I'd guess most people don't replace the door openers until they stop working. Dead one probably have burnt out motors. For the RPM: Have a bicycle with a speedo on it? Put the wheel on the output shaft and do a little...

Another mill motor question - garage door opener?

Is a garage door opener motor a continuous duty motor? They really only run for 30 seconds. Why not just get an AC motor and pulleys or chain/sprocket. You'll know the RPM.

Sam Adams to lose craft beer status

?? I thought BMC (one of them) owned Sam Adams. Ever notice how the ads NEVER use the "bland dull American beers" anymore? Can't bash yourself.

    Vessel dimension ratios?

Does it matter? A boil kettle or mash tun being tall and narrow over short and wide? I can see it mattering more with a mash tun. Taller the more pressure at the bottom, possibly compacting it a bit more then a wide shallow version. Main reason for the Q is I'm looking to use up less...

stupid noob! i used soap and water to clean my fermenter bucket

I also heard (as a child) the old wives's tale that if milk is *ever* used in a glass, the beer will not hold a head (in that glass).

The song "Good Rats" by The Dropkick Murphys comes to mind. Turn that Guinness to gold!

    GFI outlet vs breaker

You could toss in a GFI breaker. But they have been known to trip from the heat from the surrounding breakers. Better off with the outlet.

What Do I Do With the Hops?

Cool the wort, preferable to the pitching temp of the yeast you are using. Ditch the hops. No need for secondary (in most cases) Don't siphon, dump, helps aerate the wort for happy yeast growth. straining out the hops and other debris will help the aeration too.

What do you do for a living?

Fix, install, train, and rebuild CNC lasers. (actually I'll fix just about anything someone wants to pay me to fix) Also do PLC programing. Hobbies, having almost every tool known to man, tinkering with just about anything. Like embedded controler design (made my own temp controler)...

Kit times: Are they taking the Muntons?

Nah. From what I've been reading, 3-4 weeks fermenting. Priming sugar and bottle. Keep bottle at 70F (21C) for at least 3 weeks (for the carbonation to happen) Then toss in fridge and enjoy. (now thats for standard brews, your typical starter kits)

    Brewballs? Look kinda cool

Doesn't the krausen drop back into the beer? And the balls sink when it hit the target. Just gotta look for it to no be on top. The super dark stouts I can see it being a bit tough to see. (though, I'm personally, use a refractometer to see if fermentation is done)

    Brew in bag?

pH? I grabbed a container of the the pH stabilizer. Is this stuff worthwhile in the BIaB method? I also have a couple pH meters. Is the pH target just for the mashing or also for the pre-boil? Secondly if its a full boil vs partial boil, should the pH be the same either way?

Danby 645bls LED display cleaning (not for the queezy)

Flux remover? Cleans stuff nicely and doesn't leave residue behind. (radio shack used to sell it, they still might. I get mine from supply houses) I wouldn't use it for any food 'stuff'
