OK, I'll admit it. I will probably never brew an IPA.

I'm with ya. Not a big fan of IPAs, so I guess I'm not a hophead. But I do like a HUGE hop nose.

    Raleigh, NC

American Brew Master in north Raleigh is a fairly decent shop. (there is a total Wine shop close by there too and a good selection of beers) Only been to Fifth Seasons in Carboro once (was just a run in and grabbed what I needed, didn't look around much) (Though I was just in Midwest's new...

    Cooling question

footenote: A good SS pot will be clad with a copper substrate. (at least on the bottom)

    Siphoning with an Auto-Siphon

Also if you are starting it with the bottling wand attached, and not 'open' you will have an air bubble. Start the siphon with the bottling wand 'open' Get a flow going before closing the wand's vave.

    Yet Another first brew tasting.

Yeah, just getting the spare fridge online. (well more the temp cotroller) Other batches are already in the works (been doing 1 gallon batches until I find my groove) Biggest b*tch I have about brewing/testing/playing is the 2 months between making and trying/testing.

    Yet Another first brew tasting.

Well I finally tried my first brew, a BB Red Ale. Made mistakes on it. (got drunk brewing. My rule now is no drinking until the 15min hops go in :drunk: ) Didn't aerate the wort (even siphoned it into the fermenter. Though I did use an IC wort cooler, one plus) Broke my hydrometer while...

Thin beer - yeast aftertaste - tap water issue?

Is pitching yeast at 80 SO bad? (I'm assuming he is using dry yeast and its typical to rehydrate, per the instructions, in 90F water)

new beer i just picked up...

Man the guys here are one tough crowd. (almost get the impression that if one likes a mass produced beer, you know nothing about beer and have no taste buds.) But I've always been a Bass and Becks guy. Though I like the SNPA a LOT more then Bass. Has a much better hop nose, and a nice...

Who has two thumbs and is switching to a blow-off tube?

You need to explain a $5-10 purchase?

    easy way to get sample?

Another item in the landfill. And no guaranty that the straw is sanitized. (plastic wrapped better chance then paper wrapped)
  15. B

    easy way to get sample?

what about just some alcohol. (vodka, Iso, etc) and using a bottling wand upside down?

    Refrigerant chiller

Uh, bad idea. Don't need 2000PSI. pressure = heat. fountain pump much better.

Acceptable cycling times for a mini-fridge fermentation chamber

You will probably have to test it. The dead band can be above the set or below the set temp. (I'm thinking above) So lets say its above and its a 5^ dead band. You want to ferm @ 65. If you set it to 65, it will cool down to 65 then be off until the temp reaches 70, then turn on and cool to...

    Newest addition - Autoclave!!

Just curious, what are you using for the pressurizing?
  19. B

Acceptable cycling times for a mini-fridge fermentation chamber

Its the off time that matters. You want the pressure to be equal (or close to it) on both sides of the compressor. Other wise you are putting a lot of stress starting up the compressor. The differential is the dead band. How big a swing it does before kicking on again. So no, it should...

    1/2 Gallon Batch

Last 2 batches were 1 gallon batches. Measuring hops that small, I used a powder scale (for reloading ammo). Is more accurate and has smaller resolution then the typical digital used. I got 8 beers per gallon (just bottled Sunday) I think its also easier to make a mistake/be off with such...
