    Stirred Fermentation

I do gravity readings with a refractometer, so this shouldn't be an issue.

    Stirred Fermentation

Let's see...I started the stir plate right when I pitched my yeast, and it ran for about 4 days, I'm using WLP007 so as soon as it flocculated, I could see it cruising around in big globs inside the carboy. That's when I turned the stir plate off, mainly, like you said, to let things settle out...

    Yeast and Yeast Starter Question?

You'll make that 20 dollars back in money saved on buying yeast. After the first 3 starters, you'll be putting money back in your pocket. :mug:

How to calculate size of starter necessary?

You don't need a 10 liter starter if you step it. Start with 1.5 liters and step it to 3 liters, giving it a good shake every hour or so, and you will have plenty of yeast for 11 gallons of 1.060'ish beer.

How to calculate size of starter necessary?

Give this calculator a try, it essentially gives you the same information as Mr. Malty. Just laid out in a different way.

    Yeast and Yeast Starter Question?

I think there are quite a few people in the forums that use this procedure, seems to me like a good way to collect yeast. If you have the equipment to make starters, you can easily triple your WL tube, start with 1000 mils and step it to 1500 mils, giving it a good shake at least every hour, you...

    Rockin' Mash Paddles

The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and... Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten? Exactly. Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder? Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten...

    Stirred Fermentation

I had a couple of brewing comrades over last night, and we did some sampling on these beers, and several varieties of micro brews [I have the hangover to prove it. :drunk: oy.] The stirred carboy is now at 1.014; non-stirred 1.016; conical 1.012. I have to say, tasting these beers at varying...

Yeast Overpitch/Underpitch Experiment From a Microbiologist

Very curious. I plugged the numbers into YeastCalc and came up with the same final cell count; 400 billion cells, but the final counts for each starter were slightly different; this is assuming 100% viability for the Wyeast smack pack. 1000ml starter + 100 billion cells = 229 billion cells...
