1L starter water and dme question

There's really no reason to boil for more than about 1 minute. According to the Wilderness Medical Society, water temperatures above 160° F (70° C) kill all pathogens within 30 minutes and above 185° F (85° C) within a few minutes. So in the time it takes for the water to reach the boiling...

    Wyeast question

Very simple instructions for making a starter, here. Like OClairBrew said, you don't need a flask and stirplate, any container with a smallish opening in the top will do the job. I've seen guys make starters in gallon milk jugs.

    Yeast starter too long

I feel the main reason to make a starter is to ensure that you have healthy yeast. I don't pitch at "high krausen" either, but making a starter gives me some consistency. I like what George Fix has to say about consistency: "Consistent methods = consistent excellence." Having the...

My .02¢ for reasons to make a starter: 1) Improve the overall health of the yeast. 2) Increase cell count.

Vacation In A Few Weeks - Nevada, Utah & Colorado

When your in Salt Lake City, check out Epic Brewing Company, they're a nice alternative to the Utah Brewers Cooperative. Epic only produces "full strength" beer, as opposed to the watered down 3.2% ABW that the Co-op produces.

    Yeast Starter

I hear ya, and I agree. (I was mostly joking about the pedantic thing.) :D I do, however, like the idea of adding the water to the DME, rather than the other way around though. Especially when using a yeast calculator (speaking of pedantic). The calculations used in YeastCalc are, after all...

    Yeast Starter

So I was re-reading Chris White's 'Yeast' book today; and at the bottom of page 133, he describes the measurements for a starter: "The easiest way to make small batches of starter wort is with metric measurements, using a 10 to 1 ratio. Add 1 gram of DME for every 10 milliliters of final wort...

    'Dented' glass carboy....toss it?

The 6.5 gallon glass carboys fit perfectly in a milk crate; the 6 gallon glass carboys, however, are just a bit smaller so there is a little 'play' between the side of the carboy and the milk crate. This is how I have mine setup, the rope handles are a recent addition, makes moving these...
