Soda Keg Score --- now how to clean?

55 gallon plastic open top barrel fill with cleaner and submerge 2-3 kegs at a time and let soak 24 hours. Add a small submersible heater to keep it warm so it works better.

My first all grain ale - my own recipe

I have Notty often hit 1.004 from a start of 1.054ish... those are usually the best versions of my house ale versus ones I keg at 1.010 or so...

Bee comitted suicide in my boiling wort

Last Sunday I had 2 honeybees that were in my garage dive bomb the kettle. They swarmed late last summer from somewhere and I had hundreds of them everywhere. Couldn't locate the queen or I would have built a quick hive. They warmed up when I turned the garage heat on and started flying around...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

If weather cooperates and this sinus headache eases I am brewing Saturday in the snow... supposed to be 34 degrees so hose won't freeze up... coldest I have brewed is 24f... hose started freezing up so I had to let it trickle and make an ice skating rink in the yard. Neighbors daughter loved it...

    Brewhouse Efficiency

I measure brew house efficiency on the wort that goes to the fermenters. If I drop under 80% I know I have a problem of some sort(last time was a thermometer that lost calibration and dropped me to 75% from to cold of a mash.) I average 82% efficiency the way I measure it. One thing to...

And pushed to Sunday... If you are younger take care of your spine! You don't want to deal with the pain I do every day of the week!

Do I have to sanitize my barrel?

Only way I have seen maple syrup go bad is mold. And that would be very visible. As long as it was sealed you are probably good to go!

Digging out spent grains with a ?

I have a 15 gallon tun, do 11 gallon batches that start with ~20 pounds of dry grain. While the BK is coming ot a boil I use a stainless long handled spoon to scoop to a 5 gallon bucket that gets dumped on the gravel around my new garage to rot and build soil so I can get grass to grow instead...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewing Friday and Sunday if my back holds up. Have to take advantage of the warmer MN weather when I can!

What I did for beer today

Installed and flushed my RO system. Prepped for brewing tomorrow... 29 degrees so warm enough the hose won't freeze right away! Have to brew Sunday too while it is warm... headed into a 2 week cold spell so won't be brewing during it!

    Mistake?

65 to 60 temp drop won't stop fermentation, slow it a bit yes but not stop it. And that temp depends on how you measured it... unless it was actual temp of the wort then the actual fermenting temps may be 4-5 degrees higher...

    Weird film inside empty keg

That is scary! I use hot BLC remove gunk from kegs I get in used. Normally not 5 gallons but in this case I would fill it to the rim then add however much BLC it takes to make a double strength solution... the acid will kill it!

    Kids and keezers

Simple metal cover that doubles as your drip tray. Hinged down. When up it is locked to a hasp. Any metal shop could bend it up cheap... Could make a backer that mounts on the freezer lid to lock it to... simple, done right it would look nice, probably under $100...
