    Color change in primary

I am sure that the reason I am puzzled by the change in the color is simply that I have switched to a glass primary, and actually get to see what is going on in there, but... About 24 hrs into the primary, my braggot took off, starting blowing off a lot of CO2 and developed a nice krausen on...

    Expired yeast

Hey, thanks for the link. I figure once I get away from the mini mash stuff, and go AG, and can harvest the yeast, I will be able to save some money on brewing costs!

    Expired yeast

I really need to get the stuff to start making starters, but, that is why I went with more tubes, well the high OG was another reason, and I figured some of the fermax couldn't hurt. I am about to jump into the AG end of the pool, may have to get some beakers for making starters. Also, how...

    Expired yeast

So has anyone ever brewed using out of date yeast, and if so, what were the results? I have a braggot that I did yesterday, and pitched some yeast from the LHBS that was about 2 weeks past the expire date. Used 3 tubes and some Fermax nutrient, but I was wondering if anyone else has used old...

Yeast usage in a a Braggot

I figured I would get the malt part, I want to be able to hang on to the mead side of it as well. This is the recipe I am brewing 7 lbs Extra Pale Extract 7 lbs Clover Honey 1.5 lbs 2 Row Pale 1 lb Crystal 40 .5 lb Honey Malt .5 Oats .5 Special Roast 3 oz Cascade 1 oz Fuggles 1 oz Challenger 3...

Yeast usage in a a Braggot

I guess I need to read up more. I figured since the beer yeast I have now is for high gravity ales, and is supposed to be able to go as high as 25% ABV, it will convert more sugars than the mead yeast, which is supposed to top out at 15% ABV. My understanding was that the higher the ABV, the...

Yeast usage in a a Braggot

I am not sure how the yeasts would give me different ABV's. The WLP099 Super High Gravity is supposed to go as high as 25% ABV, the sweet mead is supposed to go to 15%. I am more worried about the attenuation and what kind of residual sugars are going to be left behind. I want some sweetness...

Yeast usage in a a Braggot

I am brewing a partial grain braggot today. Going to be a pretty big one, and I am not sure if I am going the right way on the yeast. I took an all grain recipe into my LHBS, talked it over with the group there to convert it to a mini mash. Pretty happy with that part. I was going to go with...

Determining conversion from All grain to mini mash

Oh, and I went into the LHBS and talked with the guys there, this is what we came up with. 7 lbs. Extra Pale Extract 7 lbs. Clover Honey 1.5 lbs. 2 Row 1 lb Crystal 40L .5 lb Flaked Oats .5 lb Special Roast .5 lb Honey Malt 3 oz Cascade 1 oz Fuggles 1 oz Challenger 3 tubes White...

Determining conversion from All grain to mini mash

I am trying to figure out how to convert an all grain braggot recipe to a mini mash, since I am not yet set up for all grain brewing. The grain bill isn't huge on this, but I figure that the easiest thing to do would be to convert the 2 row pale malt to a liquid extract and leave the rest of the...

Small things on the top of my beer.

Pretty damn sure I hit everything with Starsan. Carboy, plug, airlock, racking cane and tube, thief, even the hydrometer, even though it didn't come into contact with the beer in the fermenter. I can try and get a picture, but the damn rascals are small, and near a curve in the glass.

Small things on the top of my beer.

I kind of figured, after all any bacterium worth it's flagellum would reproduce like crazy in an open environment like that. Unless of course it is an aerobic bacterium, and the lack of oxygen and lower temperature is slowing reproduction.......... Dammit, better have 2 beers, and try...

Small things on the top of my beer.

So I have a batch of stout in my secondary at the moment. I noticed on the top of the beer, some pale circles floating there. It doesn't seem that they have have increased in size, they are just kind of there. Very small, from .5 to maybe 1.5 mm in diameter, and not covering the entire surface...
